ARD/ZDF and others are opposed to the 800Mhz transition which would also adversely affect Ireland, in particular Clermont Carn.

But the 800 MHz is now in a Germany law and Angela Merkel has just been reelected. The 800MHz band will happen in Ireland too.

Mobile broadband, with better and much less expensive coverage than using the 2-3 GHz bands, are very important for getting the digital world to rural areas. Not for fun, but for work at home, for small businesses, for kids doing homework, for health e.g. monitoring my blood preasure and some day my pacemaker, for my car, my boat, you name it.

    Lars :)

It appears strange at first that ARD/ZDF would oppose the 800MHz "digital dividend" considering that Germany didn't broadcast on these frequencies for analogue, but their reasons are more along the lines of that where TETRA systems have interfered with analogue & digital UHF reception which appear a fair concern.

Clermont will only be affected if by 2012 four multiplexes are being used for DTT broadcasting and analogue hasn't been shut down at that point. A reallocation of the three frequencies Clermont Carn above E60 could potentially lose would be likely, the same way the UK is currently looking at reallocating those main transmitters which are due to broadcast multiplexes on E61 & E62 after DSO. Truskmore and Maghera are similarly affected, only that they are currently broadcasting analogue TV in VHF gives them some breathing room.

Having used 3G HSDPA broadband on the 850mHz and 900MHz bands in Australia through Telstra & Optus, I'd welcome a proposal to help bring mobile broadband to a least UMTS speeds (preferably HSDA & LTE) in these frequencies locally here too.

The issue will be continued coverage into NI after ROI DSO. Precisely when this happens is yet to be decided. Note that Winter Hill and Llandona DSO are also affected by the mobile broadband switchover but will be in the low 60s towards the end of October! Its less of an issue if ROI DTT is just a simulcast of existing analogue channels which I now think is the most optimistic outcome.
