Form RTSO1 vs Self Assessment

    Hi,

I hope I'm in the right forum, I saw a similar thread but I wasn't sure if the same thing applied to me, so apologies if I'm asking the same thing again!

I worked for a company for a number of months (June 08 till March 09) on an internship and participated in a stock purchase plan during this. Basically they took a percentage of my wages for a few months (sep 08 till feb 09) and bought the shares in Feb 09. I sold them in May 09 I think.

I then wanted to claim some tax credits for 08 (rent relief etc) but on my ROS page it stated "we can't process your request as you have an active income tax registration in addition to PAYE". I rang up Revenue and they said that I'm self assessed for 08, and sent me the self assessment form. I wasn't informed about this separately, only when I rang up. However the company I work for seem to be certain that I shouldn't be self assessed at all, and all I need to do is fill in the RTSO1 Form (I'm aware I'm late on this, but the amount owed is something in the region of 50 euro)

I've just been in contact with Revenue and now I'm no longer assessed for 08, but will be assessed for 09, as that is when I received the shares. Is this right? No one else in the place I worked for was self assessed, and I'm getting conflicting information from my work and Revenue so any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if someone could give me a link to some information as the above link was the closest thing I found to my situation.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ronan

My understanding is that you are under the self assessment rules, you also said that you sold your shares so you would have to declare this also.

Thanks censuspro, I thought that as it was a BIK (from what my company told me) I could just fill in the RTSO1 form and be done with it, but as it seems that is not the case I'll have to self assess.

    Cheers,

    Ronan
