Hi all, need to get a tv aerial for our house. I'm confused about the different types and what would be the best for my area. I'm in headford, galway beside loch corrib. I need a UHF aerial which will do for the DTT if it ever happens! Not going to bother with VHF for now. Would wideband be better than a group A/B/C/D aerial type? Grid, Log Periodic or Yagi....

You will still need VHF band 3 aerial for RTE 1 + 2. DTT transmissions are tests only and subject to long periods of interruptions.

However, if you are intent on using UHF only you will need a group A to receive RTE 1 + 2 TG 4 (channels 29, 33, 23 respectively) from Castlebar and a group C/D for TV 3 and TG 4 from Maghera (channels 66, 68 respectively). Both aerials horizontally polarised. You will also require a suitable grouped combiner (A-E) and possibly a masthead amplifier for CBAR channels.

RTE 1 + 2 are only on VHF band 3 from Maghera (channels E (05) and H (08) -so you would need a VHF band 3 (prob 5 element) or an LP7 log periodic from Antiference, plus a VHF/UHF combiner to combine the two aerials. Band 3 must be vertically polarised and the UHF horizontal

Depending on location you may be able to receive from Truskmore (SLIGO)

    RTE 1 + 2 - channels G (09) and I (09) horizontal

    TV 3 and TG 4 channels 60 and 63 group c/d horizontal.

Avoid grid aerials, grouped Yagis better, avoid contract cheap yagis - you will need one with a balun for DTT.

The above channels are all analogue.

No DTT at the moment from Castlebar

Maghera DTT channel 48 and Truskmore on 53 at the min!

Galway your a star thanks. So I need a grouped C/D to start with for Maghera (looks like most neighbours pointing that way) for TG4 & TV3 (horiz polarised) and go for a grouped yagi style aerial.

I'm not bothered with RTE1 & 2 for now as i use their internet player for anything I want to see. I want to just get something up that will be DTT compatible when it finally comes about, if ever!. So to confirm, do i need a baluan with a grouped yagi?

Another small question, i see a few different Antiference Group C/D aerials here, is it usually the bigger the better for these type of aerials would you know?

    Again thanks for the info.

yes a group C/D Yagi should be fine u prob you wont need an amp in your area for TV 3?TG4 from Maghera. An Antiference TCX18CD Aerial will be ok forDTT as it should have a balun.

Oh yes make sure you use proper satellite grade cable (with inner foil) for the installation.

Btw the DTT is on air from Maghera now (testing) all 4 channels on channel 48, if you have a compatible DTT receiver box.
