Would I need to re-sit the Leaving Cert if I wanted to become a Teacher and did not have the relevant points (that i got from my leaving over 10 years ago) to gain entry onto a course? Has anybody any experience of this?

You can apply as a mature student whereby entry is based on an interview, relevant life experience and maybe a minor entrance test. If competition is stiff, there is no guarantee you will get in.

Alternatively you can indeed do the leaving again if you wish and apply through the CAO points system. If you get the points you will be guaranteed to get in but I imagine you will go the first route above :)

    Do you have a degree?

i if you dont have a degree and want to do secondary school teaching, then you're going to have to get a degree first and then to a postgrad (PGDE). alternatively you can do a 4 year teaching degree.

if you want to do primary school, the same applies, but you need to have hons Irish regardless if you apply via cao to do the 4 year B.Ed or by application and interview for the postgrad.

Once again very helpful information, thanks a million for the response..

    No degree.

Ideally it's for primary school teaching.

So I can apply for a 4-year teaching degree once I have honours Irish correct?

Yes once you have honours Irish you can apply as a mature student to do the primary teaching degree. :)

As far as i know, yeah, but you'd have to check with the colleges just to make sure.

    best of luck :)
