DCM last month of training

    HI All,
    i'm training for my first DCM & have found this forum very useful, however i do have a question on training, i'm getting conflicting advise on the last few weeks training, should one do speed work or not or just concentrate on the long slow runs? I've been doing a long run and two easy runs for the last few months, incremented the long run a mile each week starting at 9 miles. the easy run would be 4-6 miles. Some advise seems to favour speed work whle other say you should get you body used to using the stored energy?
    would like you opinon on this.

    How long are your long runs? How long are your short easy runs?
    Two easy short runs of 4-6 miles isn't a lot. Hal Higdon's Beginner program would have you running 5, 10 and 5 this week and a long run of 20 miles. I would forget about speed, and concentrate on distance.

    I didn't do any speedwork at all until my second marathon. As the prime focus of someone's first marathon is to get to the finish line in one piece, then I think novices should focus on doing the distance work at the expense of speedwork. Getting the 18 and 20 mile weekend runs, coupled with decent 8-12 mile midweek runs will help a lot more than laps of a track or tempo sessions.

    Sounds like sensible advice -- I don't feel bad now for missing the speed sessions.... Only this is I fell a bit one paced. i.e. Run at around 8 minute miles over and over again... ah well too late now.... speed next time.

    yes i should have been a little bit more specific, my long runs are up to 19, going for 21 this saturday, then taper down. but i do need to pick up the mid week runs, now that i know i will. i was following higdons program but felt weak/sore for the long runs so cut it back to 3 days a week and cut the miles to 4 - 6. one of those days was doing sprints on a track, felt completley wrecked after those. but will leave them out now.
