MOD please move if this is in the wrong place

Couple of questions if anyone can help:

    1. If you went out on Maternity leave from your job last Oct 08 and returned to work late Mar 09 after been on SW mat benefit for the 6 months are you entitled to any tax back? ( I did however recieve a small sum of tax back in the dec I was mat leave as the company I work for paid a christmas bonus and this was processed through payroll so I did recieved some tax back through that

    2. if my cut off TD is €20550 for this year and I will only earn €16972 this year what happens to the balance of €3578?

I dont understand how taxation works and was hoping some one could answer my questions?

You may be due a refund for 2008 but it entirely depends on what you earned and how much tax you paid and were refunded

As for 2009, unlikley you will be due any tax back as your credits would have built up (assuming you were not paid by your employer during your maternity leave) and would be incorporated into your first pay packet with the accumulated credits for the year. Your net wage should have been higher for April

Cut off is how we split the tax rates. you have a cut off of x and any income over this amount is taxed at the higher rate. Since you wont be using all your cut off, this simply means that you will be taxed at the lower rate for the entire year and will not pay tax at 41%

Your cut off To Date is the amount your allowed to earn at the lower tax rate of 20%. The €3578 is the amount more that you could have earned at the 20% if your wages were higher. It is not actual money or income.

Are you asking about tax relief on Maternity benefit or just general tax relief. If you are asking about the relief on Maternity benefit then it depends on whether your employer was paying you your full wages while you were on leave. If it is just a general tax query then the refund you received in December included any refund that was due since Jan of that year. As for this year, if there was anything due back you should have received it when you went back to work through your wages (this is subject to your wages been higher when you went back as in your were just receiving SW maternity benefit).

    Hope this helps!
