The DCU debate society is DCU’s oldest society and predates the university itself, we run public debates throughout the year on topic ranging from political and social to sporting and comedy. DCU debate soc is proud to presents its first public debate of the year: That this house would pass the Lisbon treaty. The Lisbon treaty is the most important political decision of this year and we have rounded up a selection of speakers from each side of this debate.
The debate is being held in QG15 at 7pm on Monday the 28th of September.

Representing the yes side we have:
    - Conor Lenighan TD for Fianna Fail
    - Joe Costello TD for the Labour party
    - Lucinda Creighton TD for Fine Gael

Representing the no side we have:
    - Cllr. Clare Daly of the Socialist party
    - John McGuirk, Libertas campaign manager
    - Eoin Ó Broin, Sinn Féin Director of Strategy for the Lisbon Treaty Referendum Campaign

Was there really free wine for the first 50 people?

I forgot to go, I went to the bar instead :pac:

I went to this and I was very disappointed. It was just pointless. We sat there listening to too many people lauding on about their respective lies. Is there a need for 6 speakers? Is it not more important for the students to debate?

The debate went well, and yes there was free wine!

As for having guest speakers as opposed to having students debate, At Debate Soc we like to bring in High Profile speakers on either side of an argument to get their opinion to the students on campus. We host several debates a year on topical issues with topical speakers. Students can make contributions from the floor.

We do also however have house meetings every week where students get to debate. The first one of them will be next Tuesday (and every following Tuesday) at 6.30 in CG04 for anyone who is interested.

I'd have liked the opportunity to abstain from voting at the end - I was still undecided at that stage and just because I didn't raise my hand for the motion doesn't automatically mean I was voting against it.

Fair play for getting such big names though. Conor Lenihan didn't come across well at all I thought.

Amen LegendAl......I was very very pissed off over this. I too want to register my abstention to the vote but was prevented from doing so by the Chair.

It was one big joint press conference, not a debate. Snore.
