CD-rom drive keeps opening and closing for no reason. I've updated with avast anti-virus and haven't found any viruses. Computer is otherwise working fine. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

    Normal suspects:

The CD drawer has intereference on front causing it to not fully close.

A bad (or hypersensitive) 'eject' button on front of drive.

A CD eject button on the keyboard that's bad or has cat sleeping on it
    occasionally.

    Confused packet driver software.

    Shared drive on network.

Disable the drive from Windows Device Manager
WinXP: Start - Right Click My Computer - Properties - Hardware - Device
    Manager - CDROM - Properties - Disable.

    Just a possibility

check to see if you have Taskeng Spam in the task manager
If there isone or more taskeng.exe then you simply have to:Press CRTL + ALT + DELETE and then go to processes and keep ending taskeng processes until the drive stops opening and closing. (there might be tons of Tasks but you don’t have to end them all only some until it fixes.)

PS: You also may have opened a prank like gift.exe, cola.exe that caused the drawer to open by itself.
Also, have you tried a system restore back to BEFORE the problem started?

    There's a taskmgr.exe - is that spam?

    no thats normal, lol.

the tray might just be dirty or something , try jamming it close or open until it gets back to its normal rithym, i did it and it worked and a pc tower :)

Not working for me. It's an awful pain in the janglers. The button doesn't seem to be jammed either. How much is a cd drive these days? It doesn't bother me if it's a Dell one or not, I'd be happy enough to just plug it into a usb port

the tray might just need to be re adjusted with the rest of the components which can be easily done but for a usb one they can be quite cheap to pick up in a tech shop

CDroms are dirt cheap anymore. I find lots of cheap towers etc at Salvation army or goodwill or even garage sales.
