How much of their coursework do people do on the various CS computers (Macneill, etc.). I got an account a few days ago, and I'm wondering what use I'll have for it. Can I just use my own computer or what? (I'm in JF CSLL)

I used to do most of my work on the CS computers, whether over SSH, or from one of the machines in LG12 (the Linux ones, never the horrendous Windows ones).

Most of the Linux machines have totally failed due to a lack of maintenance, last I saw.

:-o so linux isnt flawless. Apparently it never needs to be rebooted, so lack of maintenance shouldnt be a problem, but I guess in trinity we can do just about anything tbh

I have little use for macneill. Only use it for SSHing onward to other hosts that are not publicly assessable really.

In second year, I used macneill to compile C and C++ assignments. Third year used stoker for compiling and running stuff that was examining the benefits of threading (stoker is 4/8 cores?). Otherwise, unused.

probably a silly question but what's a *nix? Is that like windows 8?
