Bmw 330d Egr valve bypass / blanking ????????

    has anyone done this what are the repercussions of disconnecting the egr valve i have a 2003 built in june 2002 E46 330d my inlet manifold split there the other day and there was a good bit of oily tar like deposits in it i have read this is from the egr , so thinking of disconnecting it when i change the manifold has anyone ever done this as far as i can see its only to keep the greens happy isnt it ??

    The EGR mixes exhaust gasses with normal air in order for the gases to be burnt a second time - thus making emissions cleaner. You do generally get some oil vapour in there (from PCV), which mixes with hot exhaust gasses and turns into the tarry substance and tars up the inlet and EGR (this is normal).

    Its a good idea to clean the inlet+EGR say every 100k miles or so just.

    One solution is to use a catcher tank from the pcv, which will catch the oil and avoid oil vapour getting back into the inlet.

    The other solution is to disable the EGR - you can buy blanking pipes , etc or just remove the vacuum tube from the top of EGR (on vw anyway) and block it up with a golf tee or something. The vacuum tube actuates the valve - so with it removed the valve stays closed and no exhaust mixes.
    Disabling the EGR valve may bring on a engine management light, depending on the sensors in the car - again it works on TDI engines without issue.

    I've disconnected it without any issue whatsoever - you may want to remove your swirl flaps while you're at it. See my thread below for details....

    IF it bad i would defiantly change the oil separator,thede are know to clog up ,the cause a build up off pressure which blows the turbo seals and leads to the engine going bang in a big way!!!If you,ve got a lot of gunge in the inlet manifold it's probably the oil vapor mixing with the egr gases.
