Laptop Dangerously Overheating?

Laptop (Comapq 6710b) has started acting strangely today. CPU usage was hammering 100% with just vsmon.exe and a few light processes. Even task manager was taking up about 25%. Now the fan doesn't seem to be working but I'm not sure. Did a cursory google and ran and installed speedfan, but now I'm slightly scared... Surely these are way too high readings?

    Thats fairly hot.

You should put the machine into safe mode and see if the processes are still taking up much of the cpu.

    Now at:

    Local Temp @ 81
    Remote Temp @96
    Core 0 @ 94

This is all celsius right? Am in danger of things starting to melt? Surely the laptop has some sort of BIOS failsafe to knock it off in case of emergency?

Ok, Remote Temp hit 101C and Temp4 was like 110C. I've turned off the laptop out of safety at this stage. CPU usage was peaking at about 15% throughout this period. Little Harddrive activity either. At what stage does the computers own temperature failsafes kick in?

Some motherboards allow this to be set. People normally set it to around 60-70 degrees celsius.

You should check the vents to see if you can feel warm air being expelled by the fan.

have you checked for a blockage? is there a panel to get to the dust?

If its out of warranty I would chance going in there with a screwdriver - follow the user manual and carefully take apart what you need to get to the fan assembly. I've gotten wadfuls of dust out of other people's machines this way and seen dramatic improvements in cooling ability.

Like I said in another thread, horrible cooling set up in HP/Compaqs. Most likely fan has failed or been blocked. Bring to a reputable repair centre for a cleaning and a replacement fan.

I would recommend not using your laptop until you get it sorted or you could risk damaging other components.

I'd put the end of a decent vacuum cleaner on any obvious vent on the laptop and see if I could suck out any dust. As I have an airline handy I would also blow out any vents but a can of canned air is as good.

If that doesn't work then I guess as others have said a fan has failed so it needs a repair job.
