    Hi

I have hered that students who score 100 points or more over what was required for their course are entitled to a grant to pay for their books for the year.

I was just wondering if this is true and if it is where do you apply for it?

    Thanks,
    Free_Books

IIRC, it's for students who get 545 points or above.

    Kinda wish I hadn't read that. Got 540. :(

Coolio, and if you get over that do you definitely get the book allowance?

Anyone know when we find out more about them? I got over 545 but haven't heard anything about it during Fresher's Week.

It says in the College Calendar that it's been changed to 560 for this year.

    Hrmm.. I'm grand for points still, but I wonder does "new entrants to full-time undergraduate degree programmes" mean solely first time entrants to an undergrad course, because that's what it sounds like.. :/ And I want book vouchers - I'd probably even spend them on books! ;_;

Ah well, guess I'll find out if I'm notified!

Just wait and see what happens, rather than fussing about it!

I'd say you're fine going by the little I know about you.

You can spend them in HMV though, unless things have changed.

I can multitask! I'll do both simultaneously..

Oh, well in that case, why would I worry? :pac:

Yup, once you change 'em in the right bookshop methinks. However, I actually like books. And I can spend them on non-academic ones.. right?

    Genau.

We all like books, but CDs win.

    CDs are very 90s.

Dont you get them in two installments, half now (Well November), half next year?

    Ah now! Such blasphemy..

That could be because I currently have all the music I need, whereas I could own a library and it still wouldn't be enough. >.<

Yup. Ceremonies are apparently from November 23rd-25th this year, and around then we'd get half. It appears to be two lots of 150 now as opposed to 127, which is pretty cool.

Heheh, College has finally accepted that the Irish pound is a thing of the past...

You can't spend them in HMV anymore, as I discovered last year. Hodges & Figgis and Waterstones only.

^Same! I was told authoritatively by two different people this week that it was either 540 or 550. I got 555. Oh well.

    2.5 books. Sweet.
The reception thing isn't mandatory, is it?

No. But it is well worth going. Don't bring your parents and instead get steadily more drunk on free wine.

Free wine is all well and good, but the whole Semi-Formal thing would put me off a bit.
    Effort...

Black jeans and a shirt, nah? It's well worth going to, and I felt exactly the same way as you did!

An extra €46 is an extra textbook, so that is fairly cool.

Exactly! And the more money I have for books, the better. However, should I get this, the first book I'm planning isn't quite academic.. >.>

aww what. i got my second half of it and it was only 127. ugh.

how do you get the voucher or did you need to apply for it, or are you just notified about it in november??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 368 ✭✭Lame Lantern

Got this back in the day. Would've preferred they just knock the cash off the registration fee. They should cancel the whole program and pass the perk along to people with legitimate financial issues, in my view. I had virtually all the books I needed for first year English already so I used mine for Christmas presents. You also get invited to a moronic reception evening where you can get your photo taken with the provost (!). Complete waste of money on deluded masturbation. Also, the €16 book token you get for finishing the year with a first is sweet. Used mine this year to buy a book of Andrei Tarkovsky's polaroid photographs.
