Eircom or UPC?

    Hi All,

I am currently subscribed to Eircom broadband but recently I'm having problems. It seems like every day that connectin cuts out for a short period of time which is very frustrating.

I'm considering switching to UPC 20mb but am wondering if anybody out there can advise especially those who may have UPC. I'm in Dublin 12.

    Thanks

Give it time, you only posted the thread four hours ago.

I personally think Eircom overprice their users, and the Customer Service is terrible. The UPC 20MB package is a lot better than Eircom.

The mind boggles as to why anyone (with a lot of ISP choice) would still use Eircom. They have to be the worst ISP going. It really used to annoy me watching the adverts on TV with them boasting about uber quick (7MB) broadband like they were the only company capable of delivering such speeds when UPC had 20MB on the go for ages before that.

The only reason why they have so many customers IMO is because A) many customers are not educated regarding these things and do not really know how to benchmark QOS, B) Consider it a bother to change ISP. I had someone recently say to me, "Oh do you not need an Eircom phone line to get broadband?". Other (often better) service providers out there can pump all the money they want in to TV advertising and the majority of customers out there are still not paying attention.

The most effective way IMO to have people switch service providers to get someone they know to recommend a switch and most importantly, help them do it. A lot of poeple are afraid to pay for something that they do not fully understand (and rightly so). What really annoys me is when an ISP takes advantage of people that know no better.

In fairness it's not as if Eircom have a monopoly in that.
All ISP's and all sales departments for all other businesses in general take advantage of customers not being fully aware when signing up.

No I know that, that's why I said "an ISP" and not just Eircom. I should have made that bit clearer. Appologies.

...and it's not just ISPs either, when I take my car to the garage I'm faced with the same problem. With all things, you have to know and understand what you need/want, then pitch that to your provider. If they say "yes", then they either deliver or they don't. Many people don't know what they need.

Some will say I want the cheapest thing going because I don't need it that often, then complain when they try and perform some high bandwidth task and discover they don't have what they thought they were paying for, or worse again they are not getting what they are paying for.

I tried getting UPC 20mb broadband in but it wouldn't work and they wanted me to ring a 95c/minute phone line to get it sorted. I'm going back to eircom it's slow and expensive but I've had it before and I know it works

I agree with Ve but i'm still slightly apprehensive because of the last poster who had problems. I think i'll try UPC anyway and see how it goes.

    Thanks for all your posts.

    Hi,

Thanks for the offer of help but I already cancelled, it was within 7 days so pay for nothing.

Basically the broadband was really slow I was getting .3mb downloading when I should of been getting 20mb. It would also freeze and stop downloading. I went to speedtest.net and it took 5 min just for the site to load. I was on wi-fi rang upc to fix the problem and they escalted problem after about 20 minutes.

30 minutes later the escalator couldn't sort the problem and wanted me to ring a 95/c min phoneline to check my internet and computer settings. He said if it turns out it's not to do with your pc or web settings I would get a refund.

There was no way I was going to ring that number. I told the guy on the phone that when it was getting installed the guy installing the broadband could see there was a problem but he just went off and left it like that. The installer should of been the one to ring the 95c/min phoneline cause there was no way I was going to ring it.

That said though I'm happy with upc for the television and other people who have the broadband from upc says it works perfectly. It's luck of the draw and it's a great package if it works.

Stick with what you know works... and then it doesn't.
I have had issues with every DSL connection I've had from Eircom :(
It's all grand until something goes wrong. Have a browse over the board to see how many people are having speed issues with Eircom. The problems I've had always boiled down to overloaded exchanges, terrible connections in the evening and weekends.
