Disappointing movies lately?

Got all reved up tonight as I was getting ready to finally see The Hills Run Red and Trick'r'Treat, two horror movies that had gotten really good reviews and I had been waiting ages to see.Lots of trusted horror movie sites had been promoting the movies heavily so , going on their previous recommendations I was expecting a good double bill of old school horror.
Instead I was left deflated and fairly disappointed.Don't get me wrong, both movies are decent enough, just not really what they were hyped to be, nor were they , as some had suggested, genre breaking movies.
All in all, I'd say this year has been pretty crap for movie releases. Almost all of the summer flicks turned out to be over hyped medicore crap and it seems to be filtering down even to straight to dvd releases too.
I'm coming to the steady conclusion that its a waste of time adhering to reviews or early previews of movies lately, as alot of the reviewers seem to be skewed or have some vested interest in some of the movies they review.Examples of this can be seen constantly in Empire , where almost any British film gets a decent enough review or films that they have been given exclusive interviews or pics of get favourable reviews. It can also be seen on websites where a company that advertises with them gets great reviews for their upcoming movies.
I'm not naive by any means and understand that such deals are probably essential for the sites or mags to survive, however it is getting annoying. With all the crap coming out lately its hard to guage if something is worth seeing going on reviews , which i feel essentially make such reviews redundant.Thank **** for sites like this where at least you'll get a non biased honest apprasal of movies.

This year only District 9, Public Enemies, Star Trek and The Hangover were the only decent summer movies, been pretty poor for the most part, Up should change all that though.

Agree as well about Empire, havent bought an issue in years aside from one i picked up for a flight once a few months back, didnt even read the whole thing, its pretty much a guarantee that Avatar will get 5 stars no matter how good it is (and I'm hoping its amazing) given their exclusive on set coverage, anything that gets a cover feature in the month or two before its release is going to get 4 stars minimum, pity as it used to be a great magazine

I usually go to the cinema once a week, but I haven't gone in the last 3 weeks. Nothing impresses me right now and it doesn't look like getting much better with the likes of Pandorum and the absolutely slated Halloween 2.

The problem with reviews and opinions of horror films now is that people are so terribly fed up with the likes of the Saw franchise and the various cash-ins that they'll lavish praise on pretty much anything that isn't Saw-esque, even if it is terribly mediocre.

I could be in the minority here on this one, but i only saw Moon recently and was just let down by it. I didn't expect an action-fest or anything like that, but for where it was going throughout the film I thought it the pacing was just frustratingly slow.

I've only been catching up on films for the past 6 weeks having not seen anything in over a year and most of what i have watched from this year i have been impressed with. I've recently watched

    In the loop
    Sin Nombre
    Rudo y Cursi
    Adventureland
    The Hurt Locker
    The Hangover
    Star Trek
    Blood & Bone
    State of Play
    Drag me to Hell
    Inglorious Basterds
    District 9
    500 Days of Summer
    Up
    Whatever Works
    Antichrist
    Sugar
    The Soloist
    La nana
    Watchmen
    Five Minutes of Heaven
    Food inc

I suppose watching them in the above order and only recently doesn't give me a fair scope of the year so far.

Good list, don't know what the Op is talking about, or what he was expecting going seeing moives like that.

Have seen 99% of your list, and must agree, and add

    Lymelife
    Away we go
Observe and Report (will be cult)
Fanboys (could have been better, but still worth the watch)
    Coraline
    I love you Man
    Public Enemies
Watchmen (needs to be mentioned more than once.

I hated Fanboys, the humour was so forced (pardon the pun) and it just felt like they were throwing random Star Wars references in there for no reason, there were a few funny jokes but overall it was like a poor youtube fan movie which is a pity when there was decent talent in the cast
