    Hi guys,

I'm currently just waiting to get my new 3GS iPhone which I must unlock first as I'm on vodafone pre-pay. I was wondering what's the best way to transfer all my data i.e. apps/music/numbers/texts to my new phone.

    Cheers,
    Regan

You'll have to hope that it hasn't been pre-loaded with firmware 3.1 otherwise there could be a bit of a wait for a JB and sim unlock. Other than that, yes backup old phone and restore to new phone works a treat.

Think it's 3.0.1 but if it's 3.1., can you not restore it back to 3.0.1 and then unlock?

Didn't realise you can restore a new phone to an old phones data. :)

nope.. not at the moment, no JB or unlock for a 3gs running 3.1. Some say JB soon but unlock may never come, but then again the dev team boys seemed to have unlocked all previous firmwares.
You could get lucky tho, I read some posts yesterday on some site about people only buying new 3gs's one or two days ago with 3.0 pre-loaded.

There is actually two processes to getting your new phone to the same state as the old one as well. As others said restore from the backup, which does a great job of restoring things like your old text messages, recent call data, wifi security codes, recent web sites visited etc and then you'll have to do a normal 'sync' to restore your music, movies, and apps etc.

mmmmm I asked the person I was buying the iPhone from whether it was 3.0.1 or 3.1. By asking this question they must have thought I wanted it updated to 3.1. so I think they did :(
Won't have it for a few weeks so hoping there might be an unlock for 3.1 by the time it comes.

Whats the best way of completely wiping my 2G iPhone so that whoever I give/sell it to won't be able to access any of my old data? I've seen somewhere before that unless you wipe it in some way, not all data will be removed!

Well, when I sold my 2g I did the 'erase all content and settings' but it took forever so I reckon you're just as well to do a re-install with the pwnage, and that'll leave it Jailbroken and sim unlocked for the next user.

Right waiting for my iPhone 3GS to come...due Friday week :)

    Couple of questions...
    1. Is the Serial Number written on the back of the iPhone 3GS or was that only on the 2G?
    2. Something that has bothered me since 3.0 firmware. How do you get rid of the search option on the springboard? My current phone is kinda slow so sometimes I press the 'home' button twice and hey presto, welcome to the search option....really annoying.
