Valve seals gone on Mondeo

    I need advice, my 05 Mondeo is has been burning a lot of oil recently and mechanic said thats it looks like the valve seals are wrecked and in his words "better to get rid of it and buy something else" my problem being that I bought the car only 3 years ago with 4 years finance on it so still owe about 6k on it and wont get anything close to that now. Mileage is high 120k and I travel about 400+ miles per week. I am putting 1-2 litres of oil a week in to it at the moment but not sure for how long that would last. Apart from this I have never had a days trouble with the car and it is very reliable. Can I keep it going on oil for another year or will it just get worse until it dies? Mechanic reckons it would cost over €1000 to replace seals but is it worth it and is this what it should cost? Any advice greatly appreciated

    I'm no mechanic but have you gotten other quotes for the work? It may not be as big a deal as he is saying and if so I think it might be better get it done and keep the car, espec if apart from this issue it is pretty reliable. It is still a young enough car.
    Could cost you a lot more to change and no guarantee either of trouble free motoring!

    see another mechanic

    :rolleyes::rolleyes:

    a 05 is still pretty new, I got a 01 and they are pretty solid cars with reliable engines.

    last resort would be to fit a new engine, better than buying a new car... tranynors?? might have an engine, but seek a 2nd opinion on the engine....

    Fords are not my thing but I suspect the problem is the bottom end, ie rings not valve seals. It's a common problem and I have seen many reports on this. What happens is the oil scraper rings get gummed up with carbon and no longer work. A few garages in the UK have had some sucess in this by adding a "quality"* chemical down the plug holes and leaving it overnight to soak. The majority reguire stripping though.

    There is a Ford mechanic based in Rathcoole on the Naas road who posts here. Someone like him would be the man to look at it.

    * I say quality as there are loads of cheap halfords types of additives that do not work well.

    Good idea. I would also search some Ford discussion forums on the net, it may be common problem with these engines (I'm not saying it is, as I don't know Fords, but it may be).

    Good Luck.
