There is a definite market for some off road duathlons over the winter months. Loads of great woodlands in the midlands with trails and firetracks.
Remember on being held at Tymon Park after the Dublin Inter cross country a few years ago..The lovely football pitches on 90% of the course made it easy peasy for lads on cyclocross bikes. Great event.

Cyclocross is definitely not mountainbiking. Differnent sport entirely.
Likewise cycling along firetracks is not really mountainbiking either.

Causway is absolutely correct. At the moment the only events which include actual mountainbiking along with running are adventure races (Real ones! as opposed to the much easier challenges with road biking).

Little sugarloaf (which, as the name suggests, isn't too big) is the only significant hill in the area. plenty of forested and farmland type trails, as well as a few fireroads etc. Lots of options, so he organisers would be the only ones who will be able to tell us the specifics of their chosen route.

Its a great venue for MTBing.

Shur if you knew what all the trail was like then it might not be quite as enjoyable :)!

I'll be setting out the route trail run so it won't be a walk in the park be assured:D.

As Enduro rightly says, it is a great venue for MTBing.
The National champs were held here for several years on courses designed by 17 time national champion Robin Seymour of Team WORC. Whilst we will be going for a less "Technical" version of the legendary Robin speciality course that still gives us lots of scope to have the route challenging enough for most be assured and where needed we will have "chicken" runs:eek:.

We will be trying to give a good balance between challenging and achievable and the likes of Peterx and Trinewbie are the types that excel in both off-running the MTBing are likely to come to the fore I would think.

If anyone is interested in giving it a go but does not have a half decent MTB, Niall Davis (He of Serious biker and Epic Blast fame) of biking.ie is doing a good deal on bike hire for the race and lessons for anyone looking to "try before you buy"

That's a good idea imo, €20 is quite reasonable. Between my flat bar and saving for a road bike, I'll be divorced it I turn around and say I also need an MTB.

<mod> Sorry lads, I had to snip all Jenkothere's references to this race, because of shilling across different threads. Don't know why people do this, we're all adults here, and if race promoters are upfront about their event (rather than just talking it up), they'll find a captive audience on this forum. /<mod>

**Edit- Excuseless has said he will post some info here about the event, and has given a headsup to the mods. Thats a better way to do things. We're all for info on good events, best of luck to all who enter**

Did this one in 2010 - super race run by Cappanalea Outdoor Centre in Killorglin, Co. Kerry

    http://www.adventureracingkerry.com/index.html

    Stage 1 - Mountain Biking: 23 km
Follows Kerry way from Kells Bay to Lough Caragh - some of the best views in Ireland

    Stage 2 - Hillrunning: 17 km
Lough Caragh over Seefin, Windy Gap and back to Lough Caragh

    Stage 3 - Canoeing: 3.5 km
Double, open Canadian style canoes along the length of Lough Caragh

Stage 4 - Run to Finish: 0.5 km
Short steep track up to the finish at Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre.
