    Hi,

I just started my second year in biomedical engineering at nuig, I didn't work that hard last year but didn't like the course much either. I'm a good student, as in I did well in my leaving cert and generally can understand most things.

I just thought that the course would become more specialised this year in terms of the biomedical side, and even though it has Im really beginning to think I chose the wrong course, I mean im only 3 weeks in and find the math really difficult. There is also so many subjects in the course this year it seems, I just kind of find it overwhelming.

I just dont think Im suited to engineering, I mean I cant grasp how simple mechanisms work as fast as others can in my opinion, maybe these reasons dont sound so good but I just feel like I may not be suited to the course. I dont like not understanding things and I am kinda worried if I cant understand the maths only 3 weeks into the second year, and I like maths. i will admit ive had my mind on other things to but I dont think that would be the reason for me not being able to undertand some of it.

Is there any way to change course in second year? I know thats a big ask, but Im not really sure the stress and worry only 3 weeks in are a good sign, I mean I probably could understand the stuff but I dont like being this stressed out.

Im not sure if this makes much sense but I guess Im just kinda worried about the situation, maybe Im just making a big deal out of something which isnt very bad.

I'm sure you're not the only one in your situation right now. Bio-Med is a tough course, and it doesn't get any easier. If you're really struggling with the maths then that might be a problem, as I'm sure you've realised by now maths really is important for the course. That said, you'll probably never see alot of the maths you learn in the first two years again, so don't get too disheartned by not understanding everything on the maths course.

Second year seems to be pretty disheartening for alot of people, you're still learning the fundamentals really so there's no 'real' engineering. If its any consolation alot of people from my year really only started to enjoy the course toward the end of third year, when it feels like you're actually doing something useful.

If you're really struggling and not enjoying yourself you can change course, plenty do...but you'll have to pay fees for at least one year...maybe two if you've registered for this year. But like I said I'd be pretty confident there's a good few people in your situation right now.

I hope this was kinda useful, engineering is a tough course and you'll put in more hours than anyone else (apart from maybe the meds) but most people seem to think its worth it in the end. If you're really struggling with anything give me a shout, I'm still doing my penance in Nun's Island!
