Economical Write-Off -> Keeping it on the road

Hey guys, I'm wondering if you can offer some advice for me. I had the good fortune to have a lady reverse into my car while I was parked and damage my rear door.

Now the only damage is a badly dented rear door, but because the cost of repair is more than the value of the vehicle it's been declared a write-off and they're just paying out the value of the car and leaving me with the car.

I got what I wanted so that isn't bothering me. What I am curious about and what the claims assessor I was speaking too wasn't sure of is this. What's the process involved in keeping the car on the road? There's no real damage to the vehicle itself and it'd pass an NCT easily, so what must I do? Or do I have to do anything at all?

    Cheers in advance!

If they paid out should they not have taken ownership of the car?

Sometimes they just don't bother, I had a golf written off and they left me with it.

As we've seen from mywheels.ie that most cars that are written off in this country aren't recorded as such. It will be up to the insurance company that are paying out. I'd say get in touch with them

When the car is uneconomic to repair the insurance company never take ownership of the car. If the assessor can get a salvage value they will give you the option of taking the salvage value or retaining the car.

Its up to you if you want it back on the road or not . The only trouble you may have is if your changing insurance companies, they ask has the car ever been written off - but this is up to you to disclose.
