Timetable question

This is a pretty simple question, but, what does it mean when you've two instances of the same lecture on at different times on the same day? For example, I've Linear Algebra I on at both 1 o'clock and 5 o'clock on Monday, both by the same lecturer and in the same room. Can I chose which one to go to, or will I be assigned to one of them? Thanks.

I think I finally have the Maths/Physics conundrum that is our timetable sorted and so I'm fairly sure in saying that we just have two different Linear Algebra lectures and have to attend both. At least I think so anyway..

We're supposed to have roughly 3 hours of Lin. Algebra a week, those two lectures make up 2 of those, then we have our tutorial (which looks like being on a Tuesday evening for TP students as any other offerings of said tutorials are on during our lab on Wednesday.)

Hmmm... That makes sense, I suppose. Is the timetable on the Portal the final one? Because we don't seem to have as many hours as I thought we would. We've only three hours on a Monday and two on a Friday morning? That's surely too good to be true!

The timetable on the portal was missing our tutorials I believe, so add maybe 4 hours of maths to that, then there's the physics tutorial aswell I think.

The portal timetable hurts my head.. it starts with week 5, so I kept getting far too confused. >.< However, yes, as it stands, we have 3 hours on a Monday until week 6 (as in actual week 6, as opposed to the portal's week six which would equal week 2.. yeah.. :pac:) I think, when we get an additional Physics lecture until the end of the semester. Tuesday we have hours ranging from 3-5 a day I believe (starting with 3, with 2 more lectures starting later in the semester). Wednesday looks like a 10am lecture and the 3 hour lab, with a 5pm lecture for 4 weeks later on in the semester. Thursday I *think* will be the longest day if tutorials work out the way I'm assuming with 5 hours in total. Friday I believe we have 2 early lectures, then possibly a tutorial at 1 or 2pm.

I did actually make some vague attempt at combining both maths and physics timetables together in the end as the portal one didn't include tutorials. Looks like a maximum of 22 hours prior to physics tutorials, and a minimum of 18.

The portal timetable may have many mistakes on it. You should have gotten a timetable at your course meeting. That's the one you should go by

And I've never heard of anyone having a choice of which lecture to go to

Oh we got a timetable alright.. it just happened to be missing all of the physics and include every possible tutorial (even ones we couldn't possibly attend due to being in a lab at the time :pac:). Which is fine and all, seeing as it was only maths people at our course meeting. But we don't have a physics meeting 'til Monday so the people in our course are just a tad curious as to how it's all going to pan out I'd imagine! :p I wandered up to an admin office in the SNIAM building and got a physics timetable myself and apart from the way the weeks are numbered (I think using the portal we need to take week 1= week 5 and so forth) the portal matches the hard copy. For now anyway..

A little co-operation between the two departments would be just lovely, but I can already see that's not going to happen! :pac:

Nah, go to both of them.

Also as far as tutorials go in TP, for us last year, for Linear Algebra we had 1 tutorial every 2 weeks instead of a scheduled lecture. We had a dedicated Analysis tutorial every week (which was scheduled/on the timetable), and for Mechanics we sort of had a tutorial every other week or so... I think.

Physics tutorials were pretty much part of the scheduled lecture time, though towards exams some lecturers put on additional ones. We also had "small group tutorials" which were once every 2 weeks (for me), and were physics related but not associated with any specific course.

Anyway, at first the timetable will be a mess and you'll probably get shifted around a bit, but it'll sort itself out eventually. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Your timetable is online at http://www.maths.tcd.ie/undergraduate/timetable/ttjftp.html as well as on the local. Go to both. There are 3 Linear Algebra lecturers a week, 2 happen to be on the same day. Tutorials rarely even get put on the timetable but you'll be informed by the lecturers about those. Anyway, tutorials aren't usually outside lecture hours. In my first year we had one tutorial and 2 lectures in some courses. basically one of those lectures will be designated a tutorial by the lecturer if he/she feels you need it.

My timetable for maths changes roughly every 10 minutes but again, the lecturers will tell you of any changes. Enjoy Vladamir Dotsenko!:D

Oh and welcome to the maths department.

That's because week 1 of teaching term is week 5 in their 52-weeks yearly calendar, which they posted out to us at some stage. I thought that was a mistake too had to go to my course office and they explained it to me.

Ah I figured it out anyway as the hard copy I got from the office before I checked through the portal had it as weeks 1-12, this just has weeks 5-16 but otherwise matched up grand, it just irritated me a tad.

My friend was REALLY confused as she thought she had no lectures for weeks because of it!

I must've been lucky to avoid all this week confusion because it was explained at my course meeting.

Does anyone know what time we have to go in on Monday? I'm guessing first one is linear algebra at 1. The timetable confuses me too much. I just don't get the tutorials.

Thanks for the clarification everybody. I just thought it odd that we'd have two lectures of the same module on the one day.

Seems to be 1pm alright. We've the physics meeting at two then after it. From the sixth week of lectures on we have a 10am start as far as I can tell, but thankfully we are spared Monday mornings for now! :D

I find it odd that we only have physics the first 3 days of the week, and that there's only a handful of lectures in the first half of this semester! However, it means it's gentle on hours for the first while, then gets only slightly worse. Still having a life is fine by me. \o/

Is anyone else really looking forward to actually getting properly started? Although I'm sure I'll retract this statement after the first lecture on Monday if the horror stories I've heard of linear algebra are true. I mean it *looks* ok..

Yah, I'm sure it'll start getting busier soon, though...

So, for tomorrow, no body is going in any earlier than 1, no?

Just try not to think about it 'til then.

Yeah, I'll head in for 1, there's nothing on earlier for weeks as it stands. Lie-ins on Mondays! \o/
