...anyone got one, how much did they pay ?

I see new 2-posters on DoneDeal for 1250 -1400 now, so I'm kinda thinking about it - the knees ain't what they used to be.........:o

What say ye about used ones ?

Or, indeed, one of the scissor lifts - as used in tyreshops, NCT centres' etc.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Look up the Redmount Eng. site (Dundalk) and you will see a good selection of lifts. I installed a 2 post, 4 ton model and it will lift anything from a Mini to a Shadow.

There were a lot of these being sold in the last garage closure action I looked up. You would have to make sure that they were single phase though.

There are converters (VFD's) available specifically for car lifts though so 3 phase might not be such a big issue.
I wouldn't bother with a scissors lift - no good for working on anything underneath teh car as it blocks access - two poster is the best option I think

I agree, a 2 post certainly allows more access to get at things compared to scissor / 4 posts.

With regards to inverters, I fitted one on my 3 phase diving compressor and it cost over €600 inc. vat with a switch and mcb. Not sure what you'd pay for an inverter for a lift but I'm guessing it probably wouldn't be much cheaper ? Then you have the trouble of fitting it etc. Mind you they do work well, mine does trip the mcb every now and then but other than that it's fine.

On second hand lifts, it's ideal if you can see them working before hand and take them out yourself. I fitted a 2 post lift for a guy earlier on in the year. It wasn't that old but looked a bit rough. Long story short, he paid € 500 for the lift, € 350 to have it removed and re-fitting and on the first press of the button the motor started to smoke and died. I think he said it cost €500 ish to get the motor rewound, new bearings etc. Add to that electricians costs and it's not much of a bargain anymore.

I guess you can be unlucky but if you have a good eye for a bargain then you could do very well at an auction. With 4 posts, best job here again is see it working first. Back your trailer in underneath, let the lift down on it, unbolt the posts and put them up onto the platforms. Tie it down and away you go but beware of the width if you're going down tight roads. Watch for the oil in the reservoir too that it doesn't spill out or remove it before hand. Key is to remove as little as possible, it will save youf the hardship later.

I have a bit of info. on the differences between Italian and Chinese lifts, pros and cons etc. on my blog if you're interested. http://www.autoquip.ie/blog/page/Which-2-Post-Lift-.aspx

If you do buy second hand and need any tips for fitting or an opinion on what you're buying, pm me and I'll do my best to help out. Hope this help a bit :)

I got a yoke off e-bay. Lifts the front or back up on a kind of scissors jack on each side of the car arrangement. Lifts it up to about 4 feet. Fits in the back of my car and lifts up to 1.5 tons. My Back, knees and shoulders are thanking me already. http://www.cjautos.org.uk/phdi/p1.nsf/supppages/cjautos?opendocument&part=7
only have it a little while, so can't vouch for it's longevity, but it seems sturdy enough for the hobbyist. Handy for subframe removal.
PM if you want a look at it.

    Hi Tyney,

Just had a look at those ramps, it's a right handy job in fairness. Well spotted, how did you come across those ?

It's the tilter that I got. Spotted one of their jigs in an old car mag. web search brought me to the e-bay listing and some last second bidding won the auction. Shipping was 100 quid, but ,to be fair, it was pretty heavy. Arrived to my door in a massive wooden crate. It lifts the body up pretty quickly when attached to a drill. I'm delighted with it. I was wire brushing the engine bay yesterday, sitting on a chair inside the bay with the bit I was working on at the perfect height. Just as an aside, I know that these lifts and jacks are expensive, but if power tools slip, or you over reach or hurt yourself, you are going to get hit for the a&e charges , and they will make your investment seem fairly good value very quickly. I'm also not as agile as I was, and I find that holding your head off the oily floor, while working under the car, leaves you with sore neck muscles. I'm getting soft in my old age.
