Changing tyre size on alloys

    Hi,
I was given a set of alloys that one of my friends no longer uses. I drive a BMW 320d. The tyres that are on the alloys at the moment are 225 55 R 16 but they are too big and are hitting off the arch.
Could i put different size tyres on those alloys, the tyres that came with the car were 225 50 r 16. Would that have any impact if i bought those size tyres for my new alloys?

Thanks for the help as im clearly a car expert

The offset on the alloys from your mate is probably wrong, ie they are the wrong fitment for the car. What car did they come off, and what make are they?

(The difference between 225/55/R16 and 225/50/R16 is tiny)

He drives a 520 and i think they are just the standard BMW alloys that came with his car. There was no alloys on my car just hubs  with 225/50/R16 tyres on it. The difference is huge on my car anyway any bump at all and the back tyres hit the arch.

Just hubs with tyres? Are you confusing hub with steel rim?

i mean it came with normal steel rims with hubcaps with 225 50 16 tyres. im just wondering if i put those same tyres on my friends alloys would this resolve my arching problem. Im not sure what kind of 520 he has ill find out.

How do you mean they wont fit, as in the studs would be different or that the wheel is just to big once on the car. sorry if im asking stupid questions

IIRC the E39 has a 20mm offset whilst most 3 series have something like 35mm and possibly a different sized hub (wheels would have a different sized centre bore). In other words, the wheels are not designed to fit.
