    Hi

Im looking for advice on whether to fit the Sram Force 2010 groupset or the Shimano Ultegra 6670 to my new frame. I know the Sram is a bit more expensive and im wondering whether its worth the extra cost. Any replies would be welcome.

    Force, definitely.

Was I talking to you this morning muckers ?

Force for bling, Ultegra if on a budget. They both work very well, Force might be 150-200g lighter for about the same amount in euros more expensive. It won't be the difference between the top step of the podium in the tour and the second for you anyway ! If you are the person I was talking to this morning then I have a bike with Rival/Red 2009 mix which will be functionally the same as force, you are very welcome to come and try it out to see what you think of the feel.

I would take Force over Ultegra even if they were the same weight. Doubletap shifting is cool, and Force looks better.

Not really a fair comparison since Force is more expensive.

SRAM Rival is worth a look too -lighter and cheaper than Ultegra, and is at least as comparable -Force is closer to Dura Ace really

I'd rate campy chorus 11 or centaur 10 higher than either of the OP mentions

Centaur 10 is being replaced by Athena 11. The problem with 11 speed for me is the high cost of replacement parts and speciality chain tools versus the shimano alternative.

I'm not sure what the back support for older drivetrains is like, especially when they involve a change in the number of gears, which is why I mention this. If you can get spare parts 5 yrs down the line and centaur is going cheap, go for it!

    Quigs
It was me you were talking to in Carrick yesterday morning. Different opinions regarding my question. To be honest the budget is not an issue. If im going to spend in excess of 2500k on my new bike i want to be sure that i put the right groupset on it. So budget aside, which one?

"If im going to spend in excess of 2500k on my new bike i want to be sure that i put the right groupset on it."

    €2,500,000

Spend it on Super Record..... all the way!

Don't worry about the Frame and Wheels...any old ones will do....you can always upgrade them later

    Tongue FIRMLY in cheek.....

    Sorry I couldn't resist!

Chorus 11 and Force are about the same price and for me equally appealing in different ways. Don't have anything against Shimano as such, but the new Ultegra is ugly and I can't get excited by Dura Ace for some reason.

At the time I was deciding on my last groupset there weren't any 11 speed third-party chain tools, I wanted to retain Shimano compatability for my Powertap, and I fancied something a bit different so I went with SRAM.

Sram has a strange sound of it Looks ok. Ultegra is very good first time ever I tried campy chorus.Much better than both and it looks and feels like it would last much longer.

I'll put it to you this way Muckers. I have Dura Ace 7800 on the bike you saw yesterday and also on my TT bike. The Ultegra will feel the same. I have Rival/Red on a Carbon Trek at home. I prefer how the Sram looks and I am a weight weenie so I dig the fact that my rival group with Red crank is lighter than the Dura Ace but.... I am probaly getting Ultegra SL for my new winter bike instead of Rival or Force I think.

Only 453 euro delivered from merlincycles.co.uk if you order today (sale on) for the Ultegra SL and at that price its hard to say no. Approx 600 for the new Ultegra on the same site and about 650 for the 09 Force (but only in a compact which I think you are looking for - if it was a 39/53 I could be tempted at that price)

Ultimately its all down to feel. You will not be any faster on either of them. For weight reference heres a guide showing how the 2008 models compare - the newer models are a tiny bit lighter but this will give you the general idea... (the Ultegra 6700 is 44g lighter than the SL so it should come in at around 2300g making it around 200g heavier than the force)

    http://www.totalcycling.com/index.php/component-weights.html

I believe that there is no "best" here. Its what you prefer in terms of feel, some people love the feel of the force and it really is the cool new kid on the block, others prefer Shimano or Campag. I like them all.

This is one of those questions that there is no correct answer for, its like PC vs Apple Mac, XBOX vs Playstation, Wear a Helmet or don't wear one, thousands of internet pages have been dedicated this question and most descend into war between the various fanboys.

If you want to see if you like the Sram, like I say, I have a Sram equipped bike built and ready (as well as a Shimano one - or two), I am in the town, so if you want to try them out, PM me and I'll give you my number, its no problem at all.

if you can live with the fashion police :p go for the 6600 series, the difference with 6700 'upgrade' is negligible.

By the way. I am full of it. You see that post above about me getting Ultegra for my training bike ? Yeah well rush of blood to the head. Got Sram Red for the race bike and will be swapping the rival onto my training bike instead. The Dura Ace I guess goes onto my spare. Yes, I know, I have a problem.

I used Ultegra SL for about a year and when I got a new frame switched to SRAM Red. I felt Red was crisper and the hoods felt a lot more comfortable - now Ultegra looks and feels bulbus to me. (Red was a LOT lighter)

Bringing it back to 2010 Force - I have just put that on my Cross bike and so far (not many KM on it), I find very little difference between Red and Force other than a little weight. I would spend the extra for Force over Ultegra. Looks nicer, more comfortable, lighter...

But... Utlegra and Force (as with almost all) are great groupsets and you'll be happy with either.
