Whedon confirms new 'Buffy' *comics* season

I had to put the comics bit in the title, I didn't want to cruelly mislead anyone. ;)
Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon has confirmed that Dark Horse Comics has renewed the book for a ninth season.

The comic book continuation of the hit television show is currently in its eighth series - ten issues remain. In an interview with Complex.com, Whedon revealed that the new season could mark a change of direction.

"Well, 40 issues was always the goal [for season eight], and that's how we're playing it," he said. "We're around issue 30 now, we've got about ten to go, five of which I have to write, so I have to get on that. Then we'll pause for breath and then we'll start season nine.

"I have had for a long time a conception for season nine that is very different from season eight. It may not run as long, because 40 issues sounds great until you realise that it's four or five years."

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is currently one of Dark Horse's most popular properties. The character has previously appeared in a television series, which ran between 1997 and 2003, and a lesser-known movie in 1992.

So it looks like this series isn't going away. I am a fan of graphic novels however I haven't been able to bring myself to pick up an issue of Buffy season 8 just yet. All the same, I'm chuffed for those of you who are fans of the series. :)

i never could get into the comics to be honest. I just enjoyed the ending of buffy and in particular angel too much.

Agreed, I was talking to a friend about this the other day and we both like to think that Buffy ended with Season 7. However one cannot deny that the comics are canon, and from what I understand American fans love the comic series.

The comic series is pretty good, it has small arcs of 4 comics which make up an "episode," then a stand alone comic as a coda to each story, and a longer series arc running through the whole series. Very like the show itself. It has a few concepts which are possible in comics but wouldn't be in live action, like Dawn's arc.

If you are going to read them it is advisable to read the other canon comics like Fray and Tales of the Slayers, as these become important as the series goes on, especially Fray.

How much do the comics set you back iguana?

I buy them as graphic novels from amazon. They release them as 1 "episode" and the following coda in each issue. They are about £7.50 for each book. I don't think I could read them as individual comics, it would be like watching 1 episode over 3 months.

(Although mostly I wait for my birthday and my husband gives me all the ones that have been released that year. :D)

That's a sweet deal! Graphic Novels set me back €20-€30, I'll have to get myself a credit card. :pac:

The thing to do is wait until they are a couple of months old. Then you can pick up "like new" second hand or amazon puts them on offer. But the first few are pretty cheap now, the 2nd book is the weakest of the series so far. Overall they are very enjoyable and have all of the great dialogue that made the series so great, the books written by Whedon or Goddard are the best.
