iPhone 3GS switching from 3G to Edge Network

    Hi Boards.ie people,

I have just upgraded my 1. gen iPhone to the 3GS.

However, the network is still Edge and only occasionally switches to the faster 3G.
    I have selected 3G in: General > Network > Enable 3G - on.

    Now for my question:
Is that because of where i live? (Outside of town)
I have to mention that I already have a dreadful reception for making calls - I often have 'No Service' at all!

Or perhaps I have missed something in the set-up process?

Any thoughts on this are most appreciated.

    Thanks for your time.

    Mel.

It's to do with coverage for sure. Who's your Network Provider?

If it's always like this, you might as well turn 3G off and save your power.

    Thanks CPU-DUDE.

    The network provider is O2.

Just thought I would ask on the Board, as I'm not entirely sure how this Network-thing works.

If its a 'coverage' issue, it should get better when I'm in town.

    Your reply is much appreciated.

yea it's just coverage issue edge covers more areas due to way it works so when ur out of 3g coverage network switchs you to edge network.

Definitely coverage though in some cases, you can be in an area that has good 3G coverage but still only get Edge because too many users are on the same mast at that point.

Thank you very much Kristok and J-blk.

It's great knowing a bit more about the way the various networks operate.

It is related to your distance from the Mast, as 3G can not be transmitted as far as Edge.

Also when the mast is nearing capacity, it puts some of the users on Edge occasionally to share the cells capacity.
