Ryanair travel credit

My mother had a flight booked with them and then had to cancel. She expected to lose the whole value of the flight (being ryanair and all) but they sent her an email with a 6 digit code called a travel credit, which they say can be used to pay for any flight for any named passenger (not restricted to my mother). Has anyone ever come across this before?

Is this some special feature of purchasing a flight with a ryanair credit card? Or was the flight itself one of the free flights you get?

Ah, I think I found out the reason.

My mother never informed Ryanair that she wouldn't be flying at all. They sent her this credit because the flight time has been changed and she had the option of the new flight time or a credit note (interestingly no refund!). She took this credit note which is almost as good I suppose (apart from a 6 month validity period).

    Cheers!
