    Hello,

sorry to bother you all, but I was wondering if I could have abit of advice?

basically I was looking at buying a 1.4 98 vw golf, and only ust noticed that it is 4 speed. I have never had anything that was 4 speed before - what are the practical implications?

    cheers

Bit odd for a 98 Golf to have 4 speeds. The last 4 speed Golf I remember was a MkII around 1990. Did you mean 88!!!

4speed i sure a 98 should have 5 gears but they do give gearbox links trouble so they could be worn and seller (private sale???) is selling it as a four speed to avoid buying the new links €200..

A 4speed would be heavy on petrol if you drive faster than 40mph as the engine will be reving very high above 40mph.

And to be honest petrol VW's are Sh!t so might be best to get a diesel one or go for a honda/toyota/nissan if you want to stay with petrol... best of luck..

I thought it was bizzare too. but when I fed the plate numbers into my insurers form, it said it was 4 speed. I know little about cars so...

Showing up as a 5 speed on the system I have access to. If this car actualy only has 4 gears then the gearbox has been replace at some stage with the wrong one. I might just be that the wrong gearknob has been fitted to the gearstick. Check for youself does the car go into fifth or not. If that car only has 4 gears then walk away .

Take it for a test drive, but if its a 4 speed box, walk away.

They might have called it a 4+E thats the old way VW used to call a 5spd gearbox.
