I really like one of my friends who is a lad, and we get on great. I have been going through a hard time myself recently, and he has been really good to me, and because of that, I like him even more...

How can I get the impression across to him that I like him more than a friend without making a tool of myself?

    Any advice appreciated, thanks :)

Ask him or if you don't want to make a big deal of it ask him does he want to take in a movie or a meal or something couply and see how he reacts.

That should give you a good idea.

It would help if you specified your gender!

Sh1t no, I'm certainly not one for political correctness at all. Just the way the OP said '...making a tool of myself' that's more a male thing to say. That's all.

If OP is female, then she should not worry about making a tool of herself, just tell him/ask him out and see what happens. Nothing ventured....

Lets not speculate. If it is a guy-guy thing OP you should have an idea whether or not he has had girlfriends in the past as an indication of his sexuality. That being the case as a friend you should only disclose your orientation first if you are comfortable doing so and not your romantic interest and then gauge the reaction. Be cautious.

I have a college going son -who is straight but has a friend who isn't and no-one bats an eyelid even in jest.

I think if you are interested and decide to act on it, you need to be clear about it. So many girls moan about how guys are stupid and don't see signals and while that can be true, often the signals are so subtle (or non-existent), the only person in the world who notices them is the girl herself.

I knew a girl and I was sort of interested in her and there were times she seemed like she was interested in me but I couldn't for the life of me figure out if she was just being friendly and it was a cultural thing (she was from Canada) or if she was interested. In the end nothing happened but even now I'm still not sure what was going on.

I know another girl who's foreign and I remember her telling me that here if a girl was to ask a guy to the cinema its automatically presumed to be a date, but back where she's from, it's not.

I'm not exactly sure how you make it clear. I guess you it depends on how you say it. Maybe suggest going for a drink or something and you could throw in "just the two of us" somewhere into the statement. Or I wonder could you even just come out and suggest going on a date. You don't have to get all heavy and everything, but suggest it and see what he says.

I can't speak for girls but from my own point of view as a guy, if I was friends with a girl and she asked me out and I was interested, I'd definitely go for it. The friendship wouldn't hold me back for a millisecond.

Also, welcome to the world of men. Wanting to ask someone out and trying not to look like a fool if you get turned down :)
