Clutch Rattle

There is a rattle coming from the clutch in my van (VW LT). Its been getting progressively louder since I first noticed.

The noise stops while the clutch pedal is depressed, and all sounds normal while driving. Its worse whilst in idle. There does not seem to be any performance change with the van, just a rattle.

Anyone know what this is? Is it serious?

Iv been reading about problems with dual mass flywheels and it sounds similar. Iv read that it really isnt that problematic, just that the noise is going to get worse. Is this true?

No doubt a repair will be expensive :(

Yep, could be a DMF issue. It could also be a gearbox problem. Maybe the gearbox is chattering.

Might be the release bearing too.

release bearing would make noise when the clutch is pressed. My Leon has something similar. When its parked at idle it makes a very, very slight grumble. In fact its barely noticeable to anyone bar me. Press the clutch in and it goes away. Gear change is still as smooth as ever. Had it into the dealer and was def not the release bearing. He used some type of stetescope (sp?) and said the noise was coming from the box. They said they've had it on one or two cars from new and doesn't cause any problems and it wasn't something to worry about. I noticed mine about 20k ago. The noise hasn't gotten louder though in my case

    hardy spicer perhaps?
i had very similar symptoms on my jeep and it always turns out to be the hardy spicer, ive to replace it roughly every 20,000 miles due to non standard mods
its more so when the gear is engaged rather then just the clutch that it stops for me though!
