Roysh, since no one else has started a discussion on this topic, it falls to me.

Trinity News: it is good, or is it wack?

Also: "The University Times" (sic): is it good, or is it wack?

(And any other college publications, mutatis mutandis.)

Further, now that the Retard (a.k.a. the Record) is in its grave, does anybody have a decent rhyming, alliterative or similarly-sounding put-down for the new Students' Union paper?

PS I have a message for "Trinity troll":

New Record seems actually decent in terms of style and layout - the usual content-light pro-Union stuff, but it looks really well, so that's a nice start. Although, if anyone involved is reading this, it kinda reduces the veracity of your "student vox pop" piece if one of the 'random' girls quoted has written several articles for the UT in the same issue.

As for the latest TN, only scanned the articles; a few of us got caught in a game of "spot the typos on TN's front page". We found 8, give or take (one of the grammatical typos was disputable), one in a front page headline. Smooth, guys. Real smooth.

Sorry, I just read the papers so now I have an opinion.

Times: A newspaper in ~20 parts.
    News: "Generic Headline".

    I noticed that.

To be honest, I don't get the big deal with Ed O'Riordan. He seems to make the front page of at least one of the papers each issue.

"Generic Headline" isn't a mistake, it's a pun. If you read the article, it's about gene research. A bit too subtle perhaps, but it was intentional.

"Gene" = "generic"??? I read the article but didn't make the connection, because it looks like a mistake rather than a pun. It wasn't subtle because it wasn't well thought out.

The designer for the Trinity News is great...he/she/it makes it look fantastic.

The writing is completely bogus though. I've seen 5-year-olds crap better material, and spell better too!

Especially in TN2's Film section: "Instead of criticising the film, we'll just give you a 3000 word synopsis, yay!"

Both newspapers are an embarrassment, Trinity News however is significantly less so, to the point that one could consider that with reasonable effort and a bit of elbow grease something respectable could be made of it.

I submitted a piece for the first edition of the University Times. It was not published. I was sad.

Anyway, I don't read either; I don't really care what happens in Trinity TBH. What's the difference between th epapers anyway? I understand that the Univerity Times/Record is the SU publication. Who contributes to/publishes the Trinity News, and how does it differ in focus from the University Times?

I quite like both papers, but I enjoy playing spot the uncommon word in the film reviews: "the quotidian Zeitgeist is ethereally captured by Sandler, whose blase attempts at being recherche are rather cliche...."
