    Hi Folks,

Two quick questions, as I'm (finally) getting to do a standard distance triathlon this weekend.

The forecast is for max 18deg c. with 'white cloud', and 6mph winds. I rarely pay attention to the weather forecast, so not sure whether I should expect this to be 'normal' weather, hot, or cold? (ie. will I freeze my ass off in a tri top on the cycle, ill be on the route for about 1hr30-40?).

Planning to take two gels during the race; one mid way through the cycle and one at the end before coming in for the run. Where's the best place to stash them? attach to the bike with duct tape or 'wear' them from the start in the pocket on the back of the tri suit top?

    Cheers, KQ

Hey KQ, good luck at the weekend! The weather will be perferct I'd say, not too hot. Shouldn't be chilly if you're starting after 9 or so.
I stick the gels into the back pocket before the wetsuit goes on. Hasn't caused any problems yet, but you do have to be careful pulling the wetsuit up...

You could tape them to the frame (usually crossbar) of the bike. If you are wearing a tri suit or cycling shorts you could just stuff them in at the kneecap end (hope you know what I mean) and the elastic at the bottom of the shorts will keep them there. Worked well for me this year. I usually keep my gels beside or in my bike shoes and stuff them into my shorts in T1. This may or may not work depending on whether or not you have your shoes attached to your bike or not. I don't.

Best of luck this weekend. Enjoy it.

Whatever you decide on regarding gels, I suggest you get out today/tomorrow and do a practice T1 and see how it works for you.

Taping gels to the bike, putting up legs of bike shorts or in tritop pockets, are all good ways of storing them. However, if you're doing it for the first time at the weekend with having tested it, then there's a good chance stuff will get left in T1, fall out/off, etc and you'll have no nutrition for the bike. Check out the amount of food/gear that covers the first 1km of any bike ride in a triathlon. Normally a 100euro worth of bars, gels, bottles and spares lying on the road.
