Is it a windows or internet problem?

Dial up internet connection keeps disconnecting, and most of the time am offline again after 5 mins. I've been told to try external hardware modem, but after explaining exactly what happens was told by same guy it could be a windows problem. (internet properties settings checked - nothing seems wrong there).

I quite agree with this, because if it cant connect on a daily basis for longer than 5 mins, then how can windows be updated?

So now, what do I do, its an old laptop, bout 6 or 7 yrs if that.....it broke down on me one time, had to replace hard drive, so don't want to put much more money into it.

    Any advice appreciated.

Did it ever work longer than 5 mins?

Yes, in the very beginning - yet no settings were changed.

Tell the dial up connection with a different computer for 10 minutes, if it doesn't disconnect - it's the internal modem.

I tried my own laptop on dial up connection and mine worked away fine - never disconnected itself. (this was done at my house, not at my mums where I thought the line could have been the problem)...

So should I try another external voice modem? I don't want to give out 30 euro only to find out its not the problem....

Well you won't because it looks like it is the modem.

have the laptop connected to the new voice modem. Im on it now. Very slow by the way this dial up:D Thank god for broadband!

However had a few hicups this morning with it. I had it going fine once plugged in, altho the software refused to intall - presume a disk problem. After 2 hours connection, I disconnected the laptop, let windows updates run its course, and re started. Since then, all day long i couldn't re connect to dial up.

Was messing with the settings, changing speeds, dial up configurations etc etc, and got it going again.

fingers crossed its going to stay working - I also reset the whole thing, which meant windows updates had to start again. Im thinking the same is going to happen again, after I switch it off. So im going to log off again now, and see what happens.

I will yell for help if I need it!! Thanks:D

    Well, couldn't get back on.

I have just tried again and got it connected first time. Then when I clicked disconnect and tried to dial again to connect the other end wouldn't respond and dialled out.
I then pulled the usb modem and plugged into the next port - and it worked and connected straight away. Disconnected and tried to connect again - it failed.

This is starting to seriousely annoy me now:mad: Whats going on????

Can anyone advise? Is this a windows problem? Someone mentioned that the responding computer speed might be different to my own speed settings?? If so does anyone know how to set both to be the same?
