Trying to fix a friends laptop.

His laptop can connect to a router, load up a browser, but any page I try to load doesnt. I can ping website IP addresses in the command line but cant ping its domain address.

There're not firewalls up as far as I know. Im at a loss what to do.

    Any help would be awesome.

    Could be a DNS issue.

So set the DNS either on the router or the laptop to use openDNS.

I presume you tried testing the connection with a different laptop or PC? Just to make sure it's not his laptop acting up. But it does sound like a DNS issue.

    openDNS: https://www.opendns.com/start

    Is this an Eircom connection?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

yeah sounds like eircom feckin up alright.

is it just that problem? or has the laptop been formatted?

  • Moderators Posts: 12,397 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Id of thought DNS issue, except ive tried it on several networks, and several different ISPs. Each of which already has a separate working PC/Laptop on it already.

At the mo im trying to fix it on a UPC network, but ill be on eircom at the weekend.

Laptop hasnt been formated, its running vista, but that shouldnt make a difference.

I reckon he would of restarted the laptop at some point.

Did you try using a wired connection instead of the wireless?

Yeah, thats on my to-do list. Havnt had a chance to look at the laptop since I started this thread.

    Are you using IE ?

If you are then check your connection settings.

Tools => Internet Options => Connections => Lan settings

Make sure the box "automatically detect settings" is ticked and restart your browser.

If that doesn't work you may not be getting your DNS server from your router, check that also !

  • Moderators Posts: 12,397 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Ive used many many browsers, not just IE.

DNS makes sense, but doesnt make sense if all other laptops etc on the network are working perfectly!

Oh yeah, connecting to the router with a wire gave the same results! No joy!

    Can you do nslookups ?

    open cmd

    nslookup www.google.ie
    Server: UnKnown
    Address: 10.0.0.1

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: www.l.google.com
    Addresses: 209.85.229.99

    I did that there.

    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.

I did the same using OpenDNS servers. Got similarish results. Server was resolver1.opendns.com
    Address: 208.67.222.222

and the addresses were the same, but in a different order.

EDIT: My laptop which is working 100% gave the exact same results as above.

I can access the internet using safe mode with networking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,593 ✭✭✭Soundman

What anti-virus or firewall is it running?

Try connecting with either or both of these disabled shut down. I have come across issues before where the Security software has interfered.

I can access the internet using safe mode with networking.

Sounds like a programe blocking it... I had the same issue with Nod32, it was blocking some 3rd party wireless (even though I was wired) program... once I managed with windows and allowed it on the frewall it was fine

Just a shot in the dark - but have you checked that internet privacy settings are set at default or medium?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,435 ✭✭✭Big Lar

OK here we go, It may have been set on a static IP once upon a time.

    Go to network connections

Right click on your network connection.

Highlight the TCP connections on the list and click properties.

You should have these boxes ticked:

    1. Optain an Ip address Automatically
    2. Obtain DNS server address Automatically

Just have a look in the DNS server fields and make sure that they are blank, If not Click on the Use the following DNS server address and clear the fields, Then Click on Obtain DNS server address Automatically and click OK and close the properties box.

Sometimes when people go from a static connection to a dynamic connection they just uncheck the boxes and do not clear the fields.

Im not too sure what firewalls etc are running. Im pretty sure I uninstalled any anti virus/firewall program a couple of days ago. Ill look again

Just a quick run through what I said, With Pics this time :D

    Network.jpg

    Click on properties tab

    Untitled.jpg

    Highlight TCP/IPv4 and click properties

Ensure all the Fields are clear as I mentioned above

No static IPs. Ive tried with and without static IPs, and with and without openDNS servers.

Ill check the internet privacy settings in a bit.

Have you tried tying the IP address into the browser, That should rule out a lot of things, Try http://89.234.66.107, That should bring you to Boards.ie.

What software was it that you uninstalled?

If uninstalled incorrectly, certain software packages still leave processes and/or services running that can remain active and "protecting" the system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,282 ✭✭✭BlackWizard

You could also try create an ubuntu CD that you could boot up with. You can run Ubuntu from the CD without installing it. It should allow you to use your network card to access the wireless network. If it works, I guess it means it's an Operation System issue. Which it seems like it is at this point.

Tried that the other day with googles IP. I could ping it, but put it into the browser and all I get is a page load error. The boards.ie "tag" (cant remember its real name) loads up in the corner of the browser though.

I uninstalled McAfee, adaware, and dun dun dun Norton. At some stage the laptop was working fine with Norton & mcAfee (i dont know why he had 2). adaware was installed to look for virus's causing this problem.

Im guessing booting to safemode would give us this conclusion also. I booted to safemode with networking, and everything worked fine. So its something running within the OS. I created a new user profile, but to no avail.

One last try, I installed IE 8 in a windows update a few weeks ago and it really shagged up some other programs like Xfire and Skype, So I uninstalled it - Maybe you should give that a go.

I mean to say you have tried a lot of things and is deffo not a hardware problem as you can connect in safe mode and Its most likely not a driver issue as the wireless and LAN cards are two different pieces of hardware.

    This is your next step:
    vista.jpg

Insert and press any key to boot from CD.

i had a problem like this before, turns out it was something simple!

Im not saying this is your solution but its worth a try at this point:

I was using vista, i deleted the wireless connection
hooked up the laptop -> router with ethernet connection this time
set up the connection - removed the ethernet - wireless looked for network and voila worked perfectly fine for me, turns out my ISP updated their servers and I needed to set up the new connection again

another possibility is the WEP/WPA key perhaps input incorrectly... hope this might help you a little...

Nothing there buckaroos! But I did find something weirdlike in cmd.

ipconfig /displaydns gave me a whole loada stuff. Nothing strange there, but I did an ipconfig /flushdns and then /displaydns only to find some strange:
1.0.0.0.0.0.0 etc for a whole line and a bit 0.0.0.ip6.arpa
    Record name . . . . 1.0.0.0.0.0.0 etc for a whole line and a bit 0.0.0.ip6.arpa

     A <host> Record . 127.0.0.1

A bit of googling has turned up something about apple programs like safari, and bonjour doing something, but nothing my simple brain can understand at this hour.

When I do as above on my laptop, I get nothing in ipconfig /displaydns (after i flush dns of couse).

Any clues what the hell all thats about?

If only it was so simple! For that to be the case, 3 ISPs in Ireland would of had to update their servers. I only added this laptop to my ISP connection and router this week so I dont think its that. WEP key is good, it connects to the net, just cant browse the damn thing.

Oh yeah, windows had a butt load of updates to do too! This problem doesnt seem to be affecting windows from doing its stupid updates. Hurrah for that eh!

    Thanks anyways

Norton is being a bitch to uninstall. Keeps failing on me and I cant get the damn thing off! All I wana do is uninstall it, and it keeps asking me for the install disk! Retarded!

Ill try that removal tool tonight. Thanks!

:( ah so there is internet...hmm you know it could be anything thats stopping you and when ur unable to uninstall your antivirus and arent too sure about other software like the firewalls gone or not if it were me, i would just format the laptop, why put urself through the headache of this? if you have nothing worthwhile saving on the laptop that would be my advice, norton can be a nightmare to get out and it infects everything it comes across - perhaps a harsh way to solve this problem but it makes sense considering everything works in safemode... im sure it'll do the trick for you  lets face it, you cant be that worse off than what you are now...

Meh, im in no real rush to sort the problem, but the educational road its brought me on is quite interesting.

Ive been told I can format and reinstall if I want, but the computer wins if I do that! Ill keep plugging away at it until the end of the week id say, if ive no joy then, its formatting time!

AAHHH! Found this, followed everyones suggestions and had a bit of a read. Then the OP just restored to an earlier restore point. If only i had that option. I though of this back in may when he first told me about the problem be even back then his latest restore point wasnt early enough.

So your saying that you cannot restore back far enough is it?, well I think thats what your saying

Now if that what your saying, you can uninstall the windows updates individually by going to Control Panel -> Programs & Features, On the left hand task pane you will see an option to "View installed updates" from there you can uninstall the updates. Humor me and uninstall IE 8 first if your going down that route.
