PROBLEM-Jailbreaking a 3gs factory unlocked (3.01)

    Hi,

I am trying to jailbreak my new 3GS which is a factory unlocked model running 3.0.1.
I am using redsnow which states that I need to downgrade to 3.0 first to jailbreak .

On iTunes when i do a restore to 3.0 I am getting the following message "the device isn't eligible for the requested build"

I have been doing my homework and it seems that Apple have prevented a downgrade of firmware to prevent changing back from 3.1 to 3.0 .
Which means if your on 3.01 then you aint going be able to downgrade and you aint gonna upgrade to 3.1 either .
Talk about a rock and a hard place !

Any ideas ? ..do i need to worry about downgrade to 3.0 seen its a factory unlocked .

    Any help welcome.

I'm pretty sure I got the same message when following the steps to install Cydia and I proceeded anyway and the jailbreak worked as my iPhone is currently unlocked.

    My phone is a 3GS running 3.0.1.

How long ago was that as this restriction seems only to be introduced days ago?

    1. You are confusing 3.0.1 and 3.1. Those are two different firmware version. You can not currently jailbreak 3.1. You can jailbreak 3.0.1.

    2. If you are running 3.0.1 you do not need to downgrade to jailbreak your phone. What you need to do is to download the 3.0 firmware and feed that to redsn0w when jailbreaking, because redsn0w can not read 3.0.1 firmware directly.

    I am not confusing 3.01 with 3.1 .
When I follow the tutorial for redsnow it states to restore your 3.01 to 3.00.
When I try this 1st step of the jailbreak process in iTUnes i get the above error.
It seems APple have removed the option to downgrade firmware (even 3.01 to 3.00) this means everyone is now been pointed towards 3.1
I am not talking about 3.1 and I understand that this won't be hacked for some time.

If I am missing something please let me know as it is my 1st jailbreak attempt.
Do I forget about the iTunes step of the jailbreak process and just go ahead with the jailbreak With 3.01 on the phone but point redsnow to the 3.00 firmware restore that's saved on my pc

Read my point 2 above again. You do not need to downgrade to 3.0 if your device is already running 3.0.1. Don't even touch iTunes. Just run the redsn0w software, point it to a 3.0 image and off you go.

Yeah I was a bit clueless about the whole thing myself and now that I've seen blaz's post, I realise I probably didn't need to try and re-install the 3.0 firmware.

Other than that, the iClarified article I read was good. Although some of the options in Cydia or the unlock software have changed. I think there's one or two occasions where it will say click "Restart" but that's not one of the options available. Anyway it's easy enough to figure out though.
