Polar stop-watch issue

Hi all, looking for someone to give me some insight to the following problem, or better still, for someone who has experienced the issue to give mtheir tuppenceworth !

I use a Polar watch / heart monitor, but to be honest, it's used 99% o the time just for timing my training runs. I've don 3 marathons (2 x DCM and last week's Berlin marathon) and worn it each time so that I could track my pace.

In Dublin on both occasions, I started my watch crossing the start line and looking at the watch a few minutes later, it had moved off the stopwatch feature and is displaying a "00" heart reading i.e. monitor readout but showing zero as no monitor attached. Usually, I can re-set it at the next mile marker and away we go.

Last Sun. despite re-setting it several times, I only got one kilometre completed whereby it stayed on timer function for the full km - beyond that, it proved useless so I reverted to trying to get into my usual pace/rhythm and and use the offical course clocks to determine my progress.

I'm assuming that the proliferation of other timing and monitoring devices in a crowded running group is playing havoc with it - and that the density of the running group in Berlin meant I was always in close proximity to someone whose device was playing havoc with mine - anyone else ever experience this frustrating problem ?

ps - I can go on a 20 mile training run and the watch works perfectly from first minute to last so I know it's not a core function problem, or lack of batteries etc.

I have a notion that there is a lock you can set so that it is immune from others nearby. I have used mine for 2 marathons and a few half's and have had no problem, excpet when batteries are weak.
By the way, have you sent off the watch/wrist unit for service yet? I think mine is a bit dodgy and now sure whether to get local jeweller to replace the battery or should I send it to sevice agent. Am afriad I wont have ti back for DCM this year
