ANPR cameras fitted into "smart" advertising bilboards.

A advertisement company in the UK has come up with the idea of installing ANPR CCTV into digital billboards so that they can build up a profile from the type of car and desplay a corresponding add.

If it is a Honda Civic or twin cam it will show up an advertisement associated with a prat. :D

Jokes aside, I would consider this technology both intrusive and a distraction to drivers

What does advertising have to do with a police state?

Well if you can't make the connection between having your details flashed up as you drive past an advertisement and the totalitarian state, not much I can do for you, mate.

Congratulations on the formation of this highly original and refreshing opinion.

May I suggest you now return to your lessons so can learn how to spell and punctuate your forthcoming visionary revelations?

Until then, smile! You're on candid camera!

    Get used to it. ;)

With all due respect that is a silly question.

surveillance society is probably a more apt description. :)

What an opinion. Do you love your "betters"?

The billboard is showing what is the correct type of oil that a particular oil manufacturer recommends for your car.

I can't imaging the reaction you would get leaving your car in for a dervice and specifying a specific brand of oil. You'll be told you are getting what ever is in that drum over there.

I don't think it is a silly question at all. I think there's a world of difference between personalised adverts from a commercial organisation and hidden speed / motor tax cameras used by the police.

    @Gil_Dub - this isn't the English forum.

    Plenty.

These advertisement companies would need to have access into the DVLA records, this automatically hands over any information to the authorities.

Digital data must also be retained for two years under the EU data retention act so you can't make up an alibi's that you weren't in a specified area with these billboards at a given time.

In other words its a trojan horse surveillance device:eek:

All the motor check websites already have access to this as it is, do they not?

Does this act apply to advertising companies? There is no telephony involved here.

You can't say that your vehicle wasn't in a specified area alright, should you need to make up alibis.

    :

You . me or anyone else can check the make and model of a car with a particular number plate for free using any of the car checking websites, whats the big deal.

Which of your details are being flashed up as you drive past? Or are you just throwing out a paranoid fantasy and hopeing no one calls you on it but get hysterical about it anyway?

    Duh Stekelly....

If the product that comes up on the ad is aimed specifically at what you are driving, other people may be able to figure out what it is you are driving

Oh, wait - if they look at your car they may also know what you are driving  Cr@p, better knuckle down to it and get that cloaking device working!

I can see a practical application for this, eventually: Emtional Blackmail !

    Bear with me.......

You're driving along in your 00-reg Whatever, and the first billboard on the RingRoad says: "....oh dear....still driving THAT thing, are you....? "

Or, socio-emotional terrorism, linked to cheating website:
    "Hah - you B'stard ! I see you....you're clothes are on the driveway....cheat on me would you....... "

    iFancy

    Don't believe me......? Tut, tut........we've been here before......:D :D

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The thing about ANPR cameras is that there is loads of them already in the UK. Every time I drive to london I drive past at least two sets of them (not including the congestion charge ones either), and most likely a lot of the single cameras and ones on overhead gantries can/do funtction as ANPR cameras.

People get all worried about this and who is tracking them .... personally dont give a crap:

I couldnt even tell you the last time I looked at a billboard while I was driving, stuck in traffic yes, moving ... no.

Correct. AFAIK they also have most of the publicly ran CCTV cameras feeding into the ANPR systems or are getting them connected.
