I've used the Dublin bike scheme a few times now and, other that looking ridiculous ( my 6'3 frame perched on an ugly girls bike) it's brilliant.

I also downloaded an iPhone app developed by a Dublin crowd that shows me on google maps where my nearest station is, how many bikes are there and how many spaces there are. Again, brilliant.

So imagine my disapointment/anger/frustration last night when I read that jc decaux (big French advertising crowd and operator of Dublin bike scheme) ordered them to take the app down or they would start legal proceedings!!!!!

    Why?

    1. It's a great app
    2. The guys were using it as an opportunity to showcase their skills. The economic climate is crappy enough and these guys were just trying to Market themselves whilst producing a really useful service
    3. From jc decaux this is real 'cut your nose off despite your face' stuff

anyone fancy starting a petition to get the guys and their app reinstated?

Did the App infringe on any copyrights?

Such idiots, it would have made more people use the bike service

Can you access the Dublin Bikes site on your phone? Don't they have the same facility?

    http://www.dublinbikes.ie/all_stations/station_map

Now I don't have an iPhone so I don't know how hard/easy it is as compared to using an App.

    *Puts on tinfoil hat*

Maybe they don't want the Bike Scheme to be successful. Afterall they are only runnning it in order to get advertising space around the city. If the scheme fails they probably get to keep the advertising space but don't have the hassle of running a bike scheme

of course they don't want it to be successful. They got a load of free (and in some places, dangerous) advertising and in return have to supply and maintain 400 bicycles. Any funds generated by the scheme go to DCC, not JC Decaux.

JC Decaux will have this app out very soon again but will charge for it.

Maybe they want you to rent a Sherpa to get around??

    Under-paid foreign workers ftw

The information used in the app is all information that is available on the website for free. So it is really just scraping information off the site and putting it on a map.

Also according to the develops they had permission from JC Deaux to develop the application and then they turned around and said they would start legal proceedings.

Sounds like they want to write there own and charge for it me thunks.

Anyone found that they got a bike only to find that there are no free stands when you got to your destination?

That'll happen alright. You can find out at the stand where the nearest available spots are and they allow you 15 extra minutes to get there so they do.

Forward the data to the greens, and post on commuting and transport rather than here.

I reckon that once Apple let JCDickeau plaster massive ad's all over their ipod site for free they'll have no problem with this app. That's how it works is'nt it?

Oh the irony of JC Decaux threatening legal proceedings...

Someone should tell them one of the conditions of getting their cheap, ugly, advertising 'Metropoles' all over the footpaths was that they agreed to take down loads of their crappy billboards, but (surprise!) they haven't done so.

Has not happened me yet - but you do see a truck of bikes around the city where I hope they are shuffling them around as opposed to maintaining them.

Its a great service - I hope it lasts....Why did they not go for pink bikes ;)

Yeah I think they move them around so there's not a glut of bikes in one place at the end of the day and none anywhere else. I'd presume they'll try to keep slots free on most stands to help users.

Yeah, wasnt there something recently about them being bad for blind people? the stick doesnt 'find' the billboard before the person does?

so i just got my dublin bikes card but can't see that jc decaux have replaced the iphone app. that they got removed last year. does anyone know if they have created and released one? it'd be so handy...

hate the fact that they used bully tactics to get rid of the other one too... shame they couldn't have worked WITH the people who created it and came to some sort of deal...
