What's it like to work/train at a barbers?

Everyone keeps telling me to get into hairdressing. But I don't think I would be any good at it. I was going to train at a hairdressers but decided not too as it was 3 to 4 years and I have been told loads about how bad the money is at first, also if I didn't like it I would more than likely leave, I have arleady dropped out of one course, so I don't want to have a CV that makes me look like some quitter.

I heard about this 6 week barber course and was thinking of trying it out, as it's only 6 weeks I can put up with that even if it is a load of rubbish, but if I do like it then at least it will be a trade.

The people telling me to work in this industry have said that I would be better off training at a salon as I would learn more about styling and would be with young, trendy people my own age, whereas if I was at a barbers I would probably be stuck with boring owl fellas.

The thing is when I get my hair cut I prefer going to salons as I get highlights and a great style, I always leave liking the way I look, when I used to go to barbers I would always just get it short and spikey as the barber wouldn't have a clue how to do anything else except for a buzz cut, which wouldn't suit me.

This course I was thinking of applying for is at the Grafton Barber, I've never been, does anyone know what they are like, I was looking at their website and they keep saying 'remember, real men don't do salons'. So I don't know whether to even bother coz I don't know if I would be seen as a 'real man' by them, now I'm not gay or feminine, possibly more of a metrosexual/pretty boy, I colour my hair, I wear all the high street clothes and I'm not into sports, so I would say their opinion of a real man would be some burly, football loving, pint drinking, skinhead. And I'm not adverse to people like that, but I would hate it if I was put down coz I like to have a trendy image.

Has anyone ever dealt with them before? Would I look out of place if I took their course? Would I even be allowed take the course? And most of all should I even bother?

Sorry for the long post and all the questions, I just need advice.

btw apologies if anyone was offended by what I said in the 5th paragraph, I was just wondering what they meant with their 'real men' comment!
