Distance from exchange

    Hi
Quick question, I am 4 miles away from my exchange and eircom are telling me That this is the reason for poor Internet speeds.

I am wondering would a change of service provider mean I could get around this assuming this is the problem.

I am asking do they all use the same exchange. I.e Could the bt or chorus exchange be next door.

    Thanks
    Max

    Invariably yes.

Your main options would be if there a cable operator in your area or getting wireless boradband.

most slow dsl problems are caused by a

    DSL filter is ......

    missing

    faulty

the wrong way around (ie filter is plugged into the phone instead of the phone socket)

or in the wrong place (dsl modem should not be on a filter, you should have a double socket filter that allows you to plug the bb and the phone to 1 phone socket, the phone is through a filter and the DSL is stright through)

    OP....

    1) check "attenuation" on http:\\192.168.1.254

    2) plug out every phone, sky box, caller id, DSL filter etc, have nothing connected to the phone line,
if this can't be done, ie monitored alarm, then ring the alarm crowd and tell them its messing up your broadband

    3) next plug the eircom modem directly into a phone point (no filter) and see if its any better,

.....noise same/worse.... try the modem in a different phone point

.....noise better..... then reconnect 1 thing at a time (thru a DSL filter) turning the bb modem off and on and re-testing after every thing until you find the culprit

    4) when your finished and all is well (ie the noise is still low) check the dsl speed if it is below what it should be then ring eircom 1800503303 say technical support and explain the line used to be bad but its fixed now, and ask them to try you on full speed again.

hi there sorry to hijack the thread, but how do these stats look?

Line State Up Modulation DMT Data Path Interleave
Downstream Upstream Max Allowed Speed (kbps) 4096 384

    SN Margin (dB) 10.60 16.00

    Line Attenuation (dB) 51.50 31.50 CRC Errors 0 0

    cheers

also is it possible to permanently enable remote access on a netopia?
you can enable it but after you reboot the router it goes back to disabled. is there any way to leave it on permanently?

Those stats look quite good , stable at 4mbits and just enough margin @ 10.6db . Have eircom throttled a 7 mbit back to 4mbit for you by agreement ???

I surmise c.3 miles from the exchange ??

    i am 4km from exchange.

hi i was syncing all yesterday at 6216kb and downloading all yesterday evening at 5.5 mb. last night i was downloading at 660kb/sec

this morning it sync had changed to 4096kb..

i am supposed to be upgraded to full business 7.6mb line today, to get the benefit of 12:1 contention... dont know if that will do any good.. what do you think?

i didnt authorise the sync speed to change, dont know why it did.

its a pain, as eircom dont have any in between, ie they only have 1, 3 , 7 12 etc..

    any suggestions?

    How slow was slow though??

Mukki's post left out one very important thing: Contention.

If it's just slow in the evenings, then I'd look at more than just the attenuation. I've rarely heard anyone describe working 4 mbps broadband as "slow".

The signal margin is grand if it's above 6dB. 8dB for comfort. Some lines I've seen gain 2 mbps while only going from an average 10 dB to 7 dB, while others were barely able to reach 500 kbps extra with the same drop in margin. The relevance is that it's hard to guess the health of the line without knowing the signal margins of all the carriers available to the DSL line.

To answer the origonal question . Chorus or BT would not be any better as they are simply resellers of Eircom BB . They do not have Exchanges .In some cases they have have capacity in an Eircom Exch but the cables used to get the line to your house will be Eircoms . If you are 4 miles from an Exch probably the max speed you could hope for to work efficiently is 1 mg .
