    Hi,

Sorry if this has been done already, but I've been on the dole for two weeks now and I got a letter asking me to come and sign on in my social welfare office on a specific date. It doesnt say in my letter but aside from the usual social services card/ID do they ask you questions? should I be bringing proof i've been looking for jobs? what does it involve exactly?

    Cheers

    LC

When you go to sign on, it's literally just lining up, giving them your social welfare card, and signing the sheet they give you next to the day's date.

If they want proof of your jobseeking they'll ask you to come in for an interview :)

Dont worry Lily, its a simple affair, you go to your signing on place, wait ur turn in a long line, walk to the counter, produce your social services card, they swipe it, you sign a card according to that date, they tell you when your next signing date is. If you are lucky they might tell you to have a nice day..but I wouldnt count on that part! No questions etc..best of luck..welcome to the dole!

Don't forget to head down to your local health centre to apply for mortgage interest supplement payments too (if you have a mortgage that is)

I actually have another question while I have you guys here if that's okay..
I'm on full benefits..and all I can seem to find available are part time retail jobs where I'd be making 200 a week. So I don't take them obviously because i'm getting that already. So the question is: If I find a part time job where I work for 3 days and get paid say 200-250 a week how much of my dole would be taken or would I be cut off completely? thanks so much

In times past, FAS used to get onto people if they were 6 months + on the dole. They would ask for proof of job searching, offer advice etc. Now I dont think this is the case..they spent all their money on limo rides!

I dont honestly know the answer to that question, but doing the maths I dont see you have anything to gain, apart from stamps. Hold out till you get something worthwhile, speak to your some local advise burreau? they'll screw you in the dole office in they know you have a cent coming inwards. Not liked advice in these times by those working, but you are getting dole because you are entitled to it not cause you are scrounging. Hold your head up and take what you deserve Lily :)

You will get your dole for the days that you're not working but you must be actively searching for work during the days that you are off. Send an e-mail to the social welfare if you have any queries. They usually take about 48 hours to respond but anytime I've asked them a question they've been most helpful.
