"Illegal Ideas"????

Well I see my thread on whether or not to file a tax return has been locked by "Mr Incognito". - and not the only one locked recently due to percieved "illegal ideas".

What's the point in a TAX forum if I cannot ask TAX questions?

My questions was genuine and if Mr Incognito had bothered reading it properly and not making assumptions about me trying to break the law he/she should have seen this...

    A little over zealous?

As I said I've been OUT of the country and while I realise that other countries (like the US) legally oblige their citizens to file a tax return whether they have earnings or not, I was not aware that this is the case in Ireland.

No point in asking any more questions here...

    Agreed, the question was valid.

If you never registered for tax and did not earn income of any kind, you should not have to file a return.

If you did earn income, or if Revenue send out a return form to you off their own bat, you will need to file one.

Just because you never made a profit or you made a loss does not mean you do not have to file your tax returns. Same goes if no VAT no PAYE liability it does not mean you are not obliged to file the return.

You'd file a NIL return. After all this is self-assess system. Your legally obliged to establish your position with Revenue. If you need a clear answer, make a phone call to your local tax office, explain your position and circumstances.

Okay- if you have a problem with a mod function pm the mod- do not start another thread bitching.

If you had bothered to read the charter you would have seen that seeking specific advice is not allowed here as it opens us up to all sorts of legal problems. In general I'm fairly flexible on this as most queries are readily answered and are not in the main overly open to the threat of litigation. I have locked anything to do with property as a rule as you're talking thousands in CGT and CAT etc so this is dangerous territory. This forum is to facilitate the discussion of taxation matters, not a free advice shop.

On a first reading I read that you had purchased a property here after you had arrived and not before so I locked it. On rereading I see your point. You had no income here so no, you don't have to file a return. I'm human. Now I'm locking this too and if you or anyone has problems with mod functions contact me first and do not use this forum as a gripe shop.
