Whats Up with my DVD Recorder

My computer, running on XP SP3 keeps changing my internal DVD recorder/player to a CD player that will not recognise any DVD disc, commercial or home burnt. I even bought an external USB DVD drive to get round this, but the computer treats it the same. Anyone got a clue how to stop this.

I think that this is the link, But its a known issue with windows

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529

If that's not it have a look around the Microsoft site, as I did see it before

Thanks for that link Big Lar. I notice it refers to Cd recorders. Before I change anything in the registry, I assume the methodolgy is the same for DVD. The problem I have is intermittenent. It might humour me for an hour and then switch from being recognised as a DVD to a CD. I have actually seen the 'type' description change in 'my computer'

Ah well now, That sounds like something to do with heat (Expansion and Contraction and all that malarkey) - Loose connection or something.

Or could it be a conflict with other software that you are running, I suppose you could try to update the firmware in your drive.
