audi quattro - manual or automatic?

I'm planning on buying an A4, A6 or Allroad (definitely quattro no matter which one I go for).

I was just wondering if there is any difference in the quattro system between the manual and automatic transmission? For instance, I read that the Subaru AWD system is different depending on whether the car manual or automatic - one is mechanically controlled and one is electronic. I don't know which is better though.

I much prefer manual transmission, all other things being equal, but if there is any advantage to the AWD system on auto versions I'd consider it.

I've driven a few of each, and can't think of any appreciable difference from a drivers perspective apart from the obvious.

I think you need to separate the two things: auto, and AWD.

In all cases, imho, AWD is superior to fwd- or rwd-only. Drive one in wet, ice or snow, and you'll appreciate it - even on as innocuous an item as a greasy roundabout.

Auto vs manual ? LOL, there's no shortage of threads on the subject, but if you think manual is good, AWD will make it better. If you think auto is good, AWD will make it better. See? No wiser, really.........

AWD systems like the Audi's, being 'intelligent' have an advantage in operating only as required vis-a-vis grip. Arguably less tyre wear, etc., but it is complex.

The scooby oth, is fundamentally simpler. 6 of one, half-a-dozen of the other, as they say.

You're going for quattro, I'd echo galwaytt's post and say it's defo a worthwhile option.

Me personally, I'd put manual in the A4 and auto in the A6 & Allroad.

Think of resale value - you'll find it easier to sell a jar of old scabs than a manual Allroad...

I have an Allroad tiptronic which gives the best of both worlds. I'd highly recommend it.

I'd agree with Chris's opinion re trying to sell a manual Allroad. Very few manuals around and they tend to stay for sale for a long time.

That only applies to the A3/TT line, due to the east west engine layout.
They use a Haldex system, company in Sweden if I remember correctly.
That's why a lot of the old guard Audi pilots didn't like the TT etc,
it has a more artificial feel as the computer decides when and where
    to place the power.

The A4's and up all have north south engine layout, and use the proper
Audi quattro system with the Torsen central diff.
It's effectively the same design and layout as the UR Quattro from the 80's,
no more complex to be honest asides from a few sensors.

Allroads are difficult to sell it seems, but if you get an automatic TDI
quattro A6 you shouldn't have big issue selling it down the road.
Not too expensive if you go to the UK either.....

Completely OT indeed, but there's a DB7 Volante in there as well. Anyway, start a new thread if you like.;)

Thanks everyone. Actually I didn't mention, I'm buying it in the States, as I'm living here for a year or so. All the Allroads and A6s within a reasonable distance are automatic anyway. There are a few manual A4s out there. I get the impression manuals are harder to sell here, but hopefully that should work in my favor when I go to buy it too.

But either way it won't be a TDI that's for sure! It's petrol all the way over here.
Everything uses petrol - even the 7 litre pickups.

Hi Firefly I just sold a 2.4 v6 A6 quattro, It had a triptronic gearbox ( Automatic) I never had any problems with it power or maintanence wise But in my (limited) experiance a manual is quicker at getting the power out when taking off overtaking etc don't know if this is of any use to you
