I recently won a fairly small weekend comp at my golf club. Now ive just recently become a full member and havent played in a comp since my teens. I play golf often so am not that bad however my handicap is high. I want to lower this by shooting good scores but am aware that i will p*ss off people in the club by winning comps with high handicap.

Do you think i should just ask them to give the prize to the next person as i don't care about the prize just lowering my handicap. Plus i don't want the whole club hating me!

Just to reiterate, i never play comps, just with my friends and this is the first time this has happened.

    Thanks.

I wouldn't take it off you if I finished second. Accept the prize, your handicap will adjust itself

As whyner said your handicap will sort itself out (if you hand in every card) so don't worry. Enjoy your golf.

Just play the competitions,if you're as good as you say you are your handicap will tumble very quickly. As a matter of interest, what handicap have you and what do you reckon you should be?

The only way to reduce your handicap is by playing in competitions (and doing well) so if you want to lower your handicap then be prepared for more similar situations!
    No need for embarrassment really.
You could ask the handicap secretary to consider a general play adjustment to your handicap or at least to consider lowering it at the end of year review if you feel it's not correct?
The odd time I've won a sleeve of balls in a small midweek competition I'd ask for them to be given to a junior instead... maybe you could do this if it's a golf-related prize if it makes you feel better?

First off, sorry about two threads, my computer was acting up yesterday.

I'm not great but i think i should be 18/19 handicap and im currently starting from the start (28), I think i got 2.4 knocked off from that comp so i'm making progress!

    Thanks for the replies though!

How did you manage to get a handicap of 28? Surely you had to hand in 3 cards when you joined in order to get a handicap. I didn't know clubs gave out starting handicaps of 28. I thought 20 would be the max and if your handicap went up after that then so be it.

Was a junior with the same club so started at handicap 28. To get lower handicap you used to only be allowed to hand in scorecards from comp. As i said in previous post i never really played comps at all in the club or hand in scorecards so my handicap has always been 28 and that got transferred when i switched to full member.

Id ask for an adjustment, fill out 3 proper cards and get them to rank you on that. For all they know you havent played golf in 10 years..but you know you have.

If you reckon its ~10 too high then you are in real danger of having a stupid low score.

i got a handicap of 22 after handing in my 3 cards. I don't play competitions so no way of adjusting it.

i normally play on either a monday, wednesday or friday after work (4:00pm)

Only competitions at my club are the thursday open and the weekend ones - which i am not around on those days.
