Anyone favour a SDC over something like a 57 on amps?

Well my room isn't the best so I'm dubious about using a sdc.

    Have a listen !

If you like it it's good.

    It will sound fizztastic.
Wow. I invented a new word!
For a low gain or clean sound an LDC can sound good.
Generally a 57 is the man for the job.

I'd disagree with t'mix here. A small diaphgram mic is less likely to be fizzy because it won't have the presence lift that a large diagphram mic has. That's why we like LDC's on vocals (mostly!). Though SDC will have a faster transient response which may make it a little harsher on the ear, that's why we like them on acoustics (mostly:)).

For a clean sound I'll often go for a 451 or better still a DPA 4006 infront of something like an AC30 and ofter it ends up towards the edge of the cone. I've been meaning to experiment recently by taking the transformer out of a 58 and trying that. Hopefully that will take the presence lift out of the mic and the weight of the diaphgram should hopefully give it a bit of a smoother attack.

That said a u-87 is often great on the auld Marshall 4 be 12, and it's pretty hard to beat a decent ribbon mic too! (or even a not so decent one either)

Well I figured it might sound a bit nasally but was hoping for a more detailed high-end when recording cleans.
