Yes any mechanic can change the oil + filter in your car. After the change the service indicator has to be reset to reflect that the service has been done. This is simple and might not even require a (cheap) tool, depending on what model BMW you have.

I'd rather maintain the fbmwsh on ours. Depends on age and whether you want to sell on at any stage. The BMW mechanic will be better equiped to spot any potential serious problem before it manifests itself.

How do you know there's a mechanic doing it and its not an apprentice changing the oil + filter?

A dealer can be completely hit and miss depending on who does the work...

You don't. But a warranty claim will be entertained if the car was serviced by main dealers, it might not be otherwise. If the car is under warranty and the book needs to be stamped, then a main dealer is really the place to go.

i thought there was a thing in that any registered qualified garage could stamp any service book after the job was done and not void the warranty, my 740i has never seen the inside of a BMW garage and never will

It's impossible to prove that the work was done to BMW specifications and standards using materials equal to or better than BMW's. If an oil filter bursts and your engine is ruined for example there's no point in contacting BMW about the warranty if that filter isn't BMW.

As long as original BMW parts are used, your warranty will be fine.

I would read the actual warranty first.

Buy BMW OEM parts from your dealer, keep receipts with car records, mark service booklet to reflect such. Model specific computer resets available online & easily understood. Enjoy...

Nobody is saying to use sub standard parts. Once the parts are right and a garage receipt, you are covered 100%.

As I said, I would check the actual warranty first.

Has anyone got a warranty to check?

Its european law that they cannot try to tie you to their own franchise garages.

Can't be sure but when I dropped it in yesterday I asked to speak to the mechanic who would be responsible for servicing it and chatted to him about my thoughts on what needed to be done. He called back after a few hours and discussed his findings with me.

It must be a very quiet (or friendly) dealership, cause any of the ones i know of, you park it out front, drop in the keys and off you go... the only person you would get to talk to is the guy at the desk inside.

The only mention of warranty in that is that they must be pan-European:
all authorised dealers and after-sales providers across the EU who operate under the regulation are obliged to carry out warranty work

There is no mention of warranty in any other context -- indeed the word 'warranty' only appears twice.

Does it matter what oil you use? I mean if there is a different(but not inferior) oil put into the engine after the change.

Just ensure it fits the manufacturers specs.

    Hi Dublindilbert.

Friendly is an understatement. I got the car back yesterday and it was singularly the best experience that I have ever had in any 'stealership'.

I am very hard to please especially when it comes to service and quality of workmanship.

On dropping the car off they offered me a replacement car free of charge (they had already made this offer before I travelled). The service manager went through my concerns with the vehicle and wrote it all down. He asked were there any other problems no matter how small. I mentioned pdc's, window washers and a few other items.

They called 3 hours after dropping the car off to let me know their findings and total cost. They were going to include the labour for the small items in the standard labour charges for the oil service.

I collected it yesterday. They offered to stay on a half hour after closing time so I could collect it. They went through the bill in detail. They did indeed not charge me labour for the small items. They didn't wash the car as requested. They fixed some rattles that were evident in the cabin that I hadn't mentioned. The quality of workmanship is very high. The car is driving better than it ever did in our ownership.

'They' are Conlan's&Sons in Rathangan. They are brilliant. They have a new long term customer.

Good to hear, I've only been in there once to pick up a part.

I guess the loaner car wasn't FOC, they'll get the money back out of you one way other other

Free it was ! I nearly fell off my seat when I asked. In fairness, it was a major service and they are not exactly local so it may be policy under certain circumstances.

If you're not concerned about maintaining the FSH on your car, it's quite easy to change the oil on your BMW yourself.

I got myself an oil extractor (very tidy way of sucking out the oil) and did it myself over 20 mins on Saturday. The oil filter is easily accessible and as long as you use good parts/oil then it's a nice saving.

I'll need to get a friend to reset the service indicator for me though. That's the only odd part.
