Does anybody out there have/had this knee injury? I've had it on and off since I was 16 (am now 28). Apparently, it's most common in young female athletes. I've been running since the age of 13 (through school) and have competed in x-country, road races etc. for a number of years. I've tried everything (physio, resting, taping) and nothing seems to working. I've missed a full week of training now and getting frustrated by the waiting around business and the pain! :o I'm currently seeing a sports medicine doctor who is trying cortico-steroid injections (had first injection last week but it's sore again today). Going back to see this doctor tomorrow. I tried taping it with iron oxide tape but got an allergic reaction to the adhesive! I'm going to head down to PhysioNeeds in Ringsend to look at knee straps (a thin strap that sits under the knee). Any suggestions in this department would also be welcome as to the different types etc.

    Hi
Im combating runners knee by strengthening the muscles areound the knee in particular the medialis which is above the knee. The petersons step is the exercise my muscle coach has me doing. You can get videos of it on you tube.
I had to take 3 weeks off running to get the swelling down before i started this exercise. Lots of icing of the knee and taking fish oils and curcumin helped.
Oh also massaging your hamstrings by rolling legs on a basket ball or hard medicine ball. They attach to your knee muscles and a tightening of the hanstrings can pull on your knee muscles displacing them and leading to injury.

Great thanks Sara83. I looked up the Peterson's step. So is it the leg with the bad knee that you keep up on the step & you're pushing yourself up with this leg?? Just looking at it makes me cringe...I think my knee will have something to say about the bending bit!! What exact fish oils do you take and do I get Curcumin in a natural health food store? thanks for the advice & hope your knee is getting better!:)

I had to go online to buy curcumin, i also get the fish oils online, for the fish oils i use eskimo 3 i think they're called, they have omega 3 anyways. I got them online also. glucosamine is another good supplament for your joints.
As for the petersons step, i do it on both knees, the knee being worked is the one on the step. If your knee is very stiff and sore it may need to rest and recover before training it.

    Good luck!
