Part time course timetables

    Hi all,

I registered and paid for a part time masters in DCU for the comig semester. I jast received my timetable today and lectures are from 4pm to 7pm twice a week. I have a couple of questions:

    1. I assumed that "part time" meant that lectures would be scheduled outside of normal work hours. Is this timetable typical for other part time courses in DCU?

    2. Do you reckon they'll give me any or all of my cash back if work refuse to allow me to leave early twice a week?

    Thanks

To be fair the part-time lecture times are clearly stated on the course info page. From your pov the timetable for the pt MEng courses would be a lot worse - the lectures are normally scheduled from 10 - 1 or from 2 - 5. I've no idea about your fees, but I would guess that since you accepted your course offer you'll probably lose your deposit.

Yeah I can't argue with that in fairness. I didn't check the timetable as I made the assumption that part-time meant outside of work hours but I suppose we all know the old cliche about assumption...

Having said that, I, and many of my friends/colleagues have attended part time courses in other colleges around the city outside of work hours. I just think it's a bit ridiculous as the whole purpose of running a course part time is to allow people in full time education to study outside of work hours.

I think the problem is that it isn't actually a part-time course. It's a full-time course with the *option* of completing part-time over two years. That's how I read it and it was certainly true for the MEng. There were lots of working people doing that course (myself included). Can't recall anyone having issues getting time off work, but even if they did most of the material was available on-line so you didn't have to turn up for lectures anyway :) Good luck negotiating time off with your boss!

Actually I've just had a good look for this and I can't find any reference to lecture times for the part time option anywhere on the course info page.

The indicative timetable link here just appears to apply to the full time option.

Man I'm gonna be annoyed if I can't get out of work for lectures. The loss of money won't be half as annoying as having to wait a full year to apply for a masters in some other college...

It's a new job and I'm only starting this Thursday. I'm sure they'll be delighted when I ask to leave early two days a week on my first day
