Article here, im kinda surprised by this, the eurosport presenter (not SK), said he had heard that Fernando Alonso was going to start a cycling team and have Contador leading it, with the bank, Santander as the main sponsor.

At the moment Alonso's team probably won't happen till 2010 at the latest. Caisse d'Epargne, Garmin and, in the past week, Quick Step seem to be the teams most interested in him. Quick Step have a big budget but would need to do a bit of shopping for some grand tour domestiques as well. If they do sign him it would turn into a total gallacticos team. The premier classics squad with the best grand tour rider in the world. Yikes.

I'd much prefer to see him go to quickstep than to Garmin (for Bwiggo's sake, though rumours persist that he won't be at Garmin next year) but surely Caisse D'Epargne would be Contador's first choice, money permitting. Do quickstep have the right kind of domestiques for a GC contender though? Caisse looked pretty complete in the vuelta.

I'm already looking forward to next year's tour when hopefully the main contenders will all be on different teams.

Appears QuickStep will let him choose his team:
Quick Step's P. Lefevere prepared to let Contador bring *5* riders w/him to team if Astana lose ProTour license. (AFP)

At the risk of being controversial...surely with Vaughters staunch anti-doping policies it would be a huge risk signing Bertie with his 'questionable' history? Still reckon Caisse is the natural step for him.

At the moment quiet high, The UCI said Vino isn't going to be allowed manage the team. So unless they pull the finger out they could be f*cked.

Kashechkin, Kessler, Mazzoleni and Colom. Kloeden was implicated in the Freiburg report. Gusev was fired for irregular blood values in 2008, but the CAS ruled that move to be unjust.
