    Hey,

I just bought a Seagate 1TB Harddrive in Reads on Nassau St for 89 euro. The same Hardrive is 120 euro in Argos, they also have other offers on all sorts of harddrives at the moment including multimedia and portable.

Why would you want to buy from a foreign company on-line when you can get the same item for the same price in an actual shop, which supports jobs in Ireland and supports our economy, especially as things are so bad in this country at the moment.

Buying from a company like Eason, with branches in most large towns and cities throughout Ireland (both in the Republic and the North) would ensure that if something goes wrong with the product that it would be easier to get the problem sorted than if you buy from a company based outside Ireland with an on-line only presence

I think kearnser was implying reliability issues with said drives.

Whoops, took it up wrong so! But in saying that I have 2 of the Iomega units and am happy enough with them. I've only had 1 ext hdd fail on me in a number of years and it was a Seagate! Damn thing cost me a fortune, with sata and firewire connection.
Rant over :) off topic, apologies.

That Seagate 1TB drive is selling for €124.99 in PC World.

After reading other comments I probably should have waited but it seems fine to me. I plan on running file soff my main drive anyway and just storing all my music and old files on the seagate.

We've just had a relatively new Iomega drive fail, first HD failure I've experienced in 20 years with computers. Would not buy Iomega again.

Why would i want to waste my time going all the way into town and waste my money on petrol / parking when i can sit on my arse and have somebody bring one to my door ?

I had 2 Iomega's fail on me last year within 6 months of each other (one was 24 months old and the other 15) - I'd never go near them again.

picked up the Easons Seagate 1tb hard drive today, but it's showing up on my laptop as 500gb, and when i registered it using the software, it says it's 500gb too.
does anyone know if this is correct, or is it just showing up as that, but is actually 1tb?

packaging says 1tb, but under drive properties in XP, it says 465gb....

e: turns out the drive is 500gb according to the sticker on it, they must have put the wrong one in the box in Easons (liffey valley one).

Are Samsung's good drives? I got me the 1TB Western Digital and like it a lot. What sort of reputation have WD got?

    Cheers,

They must have. Bring it back and get the proper one. 465Gb is about right if it's 500Gb (it's all down to how they calculate 1Gb - 1024mb vs 1000mb - marketing bull****).

Samsung and WD are both good drives imo - never had a problem with either. I've two 750 Samsung drives in my rig in RAID1.

If you're talking about the WD Mybook I have an issue with them not allowing media file sharing over the web on it. But that's a principle thing. WD drives are reliable so no fear there.

I have a 1TB on my server running 24/7 for the last year. Fast and reliable IMO. I intend to buy two more soon.

What's the verdict on the Western Digital Elements 1TB, going for €76 at http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=420463

Also plan on buying the WD TV™ HD Media Player going for €89 at http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=408560

    Any recommendations.

I have both of these mate and I like them a lot.

That being said the WD TV HD Media Plyer does annoy me in some ways as it does not seem to be able to shuffle videos for example. I have a ton of music videos and it would be nice to put it on a shuffle rather than to have they play sequentially. There seems to be a shuffle function for audio\MP3's.

Also, I have recently gotten some HD music videos from Vuze that are encoded with Vorbis audio and it can't play back the audio at all

For Blu Ray rips and HD its the business and it has played everyting I have thrown at it. I have it hooked up to my Sony Audio receiver via the optical cable so I get the DTS\5.1 surround with the Blu Ray rips which definitely makes a difference.

I have ripped DVD's to it and played them perfectly although some people have had issues with the DVD menus.

There does not seem to be any way to create a playlist on it which is another annoyance and sometime the menu can be laggy!

    Cheers,
    M

    Cheers madmoe,

Have ordered the WD Disk, hoping to get the media player next month.
What format do the blue ray rips need to be.
    in?

Just out of disk space on laptop. Downloaded film shifty(4.5gb) which is .mkv format, so no space for more until I get new HD. Had option of 150GB HD & Blueray drive or 250GB HD minus Blueray drive. Didn't take long to use up the 150gb.
